Project 777A Kalina

The Navy will stop building Project 677 Lada submarines, adding three previously laid down submarines of this type to the Baltic Fleet, funding will be directed to an improved project of this type of submarine, known as Kalina. The projected fifth-generation submarine "Kalina" will be low-tonnage, the project received the number 777A, follows from the annual report of the United Shipbuilding Corporation (USC) released 20 October 2020. Work on the creation of an air-independent power plant (anaerobic plant, VNEU) for non-nuclear submarines is carried out on the instructions of the Ministry of Defense and the Russian Navy. State acceptance tests of a prototype battery took place in March 2015 at the stand of the direction of hydrogen energy of the branch "TsNII SET" of FSUE "Krylov State Scientific Center" (KGNTs), located on the territory of the "Primorsk educational and scientific base of St. Petersburg State University of Technology and Technology" based on solid polymer fuel cells (TPTE) BTE-50K. The prototype BTE-50K was developed and manufactured in the branch "TsNII SET" of the FSUE "Krylov State Scientific Center" under the State contract with the Ministry of Industry and Trade of Russia within the framework of the R&D project for the creation of a modular non-nuclear air-independent power plant with an electrochemical generator based on solid polymer fuel cells (TPFC), operating on converted diesel fuel and equipped with a system for disposal of waste oxidation products.

In December 2014, the Rubin Central Design Bureau completed the Kalina-VMF research work, as a result of which a preliminary design of a promising multipurpose non-nuclear submarine with VNEU and LIAB was completed in accordance with the tactical and technical assignment of the Russian Ministry of Defense, the director of the department state defense order of JSC "United Shipbuilding Corporation" Anatoly Shlemov said 01 July 2015. According to RIA Novosti, Rubin CDB MT JSC in recent years has been developing an anaerobic, air-independent power plant (VNEU) and a lithium-ion battery (LIAB), which significantly increase the duration of non-nuclear submarines staying under water without surfacing.

The development of non-nuclear submarines of the fifth generation of the Kalina project was announced in 2015 by the Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Navy, Viktor Chirkov. According to him, the boats of this project will have wider armament and noise capabilities than non-nuclear submarines of the fourth generation. Later it became known that the development was being carried out by the Rubin design bureau. This was announced by the general director of the design bureau Igor Vilnit.

According to the 2019 report, the ship's sample of the air-independent power plant was not ready yet. In 2017, Vilnit told Interfax that Rubin had begun developing a new fifth-generation submarine. According to him, it should take "several years" to form the image. In addition, it was reported that the bureau is developing a new generation strategic nuclear submarine.

Development work (R&D) on the fifth-generation non-nuclear submarine Kalina will be completed within the framework of the state armament program (GPV) 2018-2025, the deputy head of the Navy Admiral Viktor Buruk stated 17 October 2018. Non-nuclear submarines of the fifth generation should replace the boats of projects 877, 636 ("Varshavyanka"), and also 677 "Lada", which are now in service with the Navy. The program for the construction of fifth-generation non-nuclear submarines is laid down in the GPV. Development work on Kalina should be completed by 2025, "Bursuk said. He emphasized that "the continuation of the construction of Project 677 Lada submarines does not postpone the Kalina submarine construction project, but will be carried out in parallel."

The development of an air-independent power plant for the latest non-nuclear submarines of the Navy is still underway on ground prototypes, but a naval prototype should appear in the near future, President of the United Shipbuilding Corporation (USC) Alexei Rakhmanov told RIA Novosti 22 July 2019. Any job must have economic sense. As soon as we see it, we will implement it, Rakhmanov concluded. Earlier it was reported that tests of the installation should be completed by the end of 2021. The Kalina project submarine will be able to stay under water for up to two weeks without surfacing to charge the batteries, while its analogs of projects 636 and 877 of the Varshavyanka class are forced to surface every day.

The technical design of the Kalina non-nuclear submarine will be developed on the basis of all the developments of the previous submarines, the Lada is not a prototype, the head of the United Shipbuilding Corporation (USC) Alexei Rakhmanov told RIA Novosti 17 December 2019. One cannot say that any of these boats will become the prototype of "Kalina". This is a combined hodgepodge. According to him, Kalina is a continuation of the previous Lada project. "It is quite obvious" that "Kalina" will use "all the developments that are in the power industry of traditional submarines." But it is obvious that the boats of the Lada series showed much better characteristics in terms of external acoustic fields. And we managed to get a very good result with a relatively small displacement when designing a single-hull boat, Rakhmanov said.

Russian Ministry of Defense has not yet determined which submarine the first air-independent installation (VNEU) will be installed on, Alexander Buzakov, General Director of Admiralty Shipyards, said in an interview with RIA Novosti 10 September 2020. The main advantage of VNEU is an increase in the stealth of the submarine. The submarine gets the opportunity to be underwater without surfacing to charge the batteries. Earlier, the command of the Navy has repeatedly announced the possible equipping of submarines Project 677 "Lada" VNEU, which has been developed for many years by the Central Design Bureau of MT "Rubin", but this has not happened yet. From the point of view of production, Admiralty Shipyards are ready to build, install and test VNEU. The work on the creation of VNEU is being carried out by the Rubin design bureau. The customer decides which ship VNEU will be installed on, Buzakov said.
