Tonghae / Dong Hae (PCC Patrol Combat Corvette)
The Tonghae [Dong Hae] class ships are classified as a Patrol Combat Corvette (PCC). This low-end class ships in the ROK Navy has a primary mission to patrol the coastal areas. Corvettes are designed for the purpose of carrying on surveillance and patrol missions within a defined area. Corvettes feature a platform which makes for safe operation, while keeping continuous air and underwater surveillance.
The full loaded displacement is 1,076 tons. Although small size, it has various capabilities of ASW, ASUW, AAW. This class ships have 1 OTO Melara 76mm compact gun, 2 Emerson 30mm AA guns, 1 Bofors 40mm AA gun, 6 324mm torpedos, 12 depth charges, sonar (PHS-32). It is very similar with Pohang class but distinguish with Pohang class differ guns and shape of mast (lattice mast).
This class consists of four ships, and each ships was built by a different shipbuilder who accumulated shipbuilding capability and know-how that was used to build the Pohang class. ROKS Tonghae (PCC-751), the first ship of this class, was launched on April 1982 by Korea Shipbuilding and Eng. Corp., at Pusan South Korea, and commissioned on August 1982. ROKS Anyang (PCC-755), the last ship, was launched in 1983 by Daewoo Heavy Industries Co., at Koje, South Korea and commissioned in December 1983.
The Tonghae class ships were named after name cities in South Korea. Tonghae is port city located in coastal of East Sea.
