Río Cañete Class
The Río Cañete Class Maritime Patrol naval units fulfill roles of security and maritime surveillance; protection of the environment, search and rescue (SAR), control of maritime traffic, protection of human life at sea; as well as, maritime interdiction; illicit drug trafficking, human trafficking, illegal fishing, smuggling, arms trafficking, piracy; in addition to humanitarian aid, support in natural disasters and evacuation of victims.
The Río Cañete Class corresponds to a series of 10 OPV patrol boats, derived from the South Korean-designed Taeguk/Taegeuk Class Coast Guard cutters, whose construction and design was awarded to STX Offshore & Shipbuilding after an international tender initiated by the Peruvian Navy in 2013, paying 82, 4 million dollars for its execution, investment framed in the plan to recover the capacities of the coast guard, covering search and rescue, interdiction and patrol needs, The construction is being carried out in the SIMA-Peru shipyards in the town of Chimbote.
The Río Cañete class patrol boats are a variant of the Taeguk class (of the South Korean Navy), being their length of 55.3 m, beam of 8.5 m and draft of 2.3 m, moving approximately between 450 and 500 tons. The propulsion is provided by two 3,345 HP Caterpillar 3516C HD diesel engines (and two 250 KW Caterpillar C9 generators), which allow it to reach a speed of 22 knots. The range, at 14 knots, is estimated at 3,600 nautical miles and has the capacity for a crew of 25 personnel: 5 officers and 20 specialists. In addition, it has the capacity to house a boarding group of 14 troops. The Rio Cañete class feature a 30mm Thypoon mount produced by Rafael Advance Defense Systems, an ATK MK-44 bushmater II cannon, and 12.7mm browning M-2 HB machine guns.
Peruvian shipyard SIMA launched Offshore Patrol Vessels BAP RÍO TUMBES and RÍO LOCUMBA at its Chimbote shipyard as part of a 10-vessel construction program. It should be noted that after launching these units, the on-board equipment and systems will be tested at sea; the affirmation of the National Pavilion and its incorporation into the General Directorate of Captaincies and Coast Guards is scheduled for January 2021.
The vessels join the first four units already delivered to the Peruvian Navy – the first of which was commissioned in 2016 – to conduct maritime security and national defence operations, ensuring the safety of human life at sea, protection of the environment and the countering of illegal fishing, piracy and drug trafficking.
The new vessels were built as part of a programme to regenerate capacity to conduct coastal surveillance as well as search and rescue operations. They were designed with the support of the South Korean shipyard STX Offshore & Shipbuilding, in addition to technology transfer and joint development of weapons systems with Spain’s Escribano Mechanical & Engineering, including the 30mm SENTINEL turret and two 12.7mm GUARDIAN mounts. It should be noted that after launching these units, the on-board equipment and systems will be tested at sea; the affirmation of the National Pavilion and its incorporation into the General Directorate of Captaincies and Coast Guards is scheduled for January 2021.
These modern Coast Guard Units have been built, in its SIMA CHIMBOTE Operation Center, under the most demanding quality standards of the International Association of Classification Societies (IACS), strengthening the experience of projects in the CKD construction modality in the region ( Complete Knock Down), as well as the acquisition of new shipbuilding technologies through joint work and technical assistance with the Korean company STX Corporation, in addition to the technology transfer and joint development of weapons systems with the company Escribano Mechanical & Engineering from Spain.
It is worth mentioning that the execution of this project for the construction of two Maritime Patrol boats corresponds to the Agreement signed between the Peruvian Navy and Los Servicios Industriales de la Marina SA (SIMA PERU) is an economic multiplier and integrator of national industries that have demanded, among others, the processing of up to 914 DWT (Dead Weight Tons) of steel, generating work for approximately 1,200 people (direct and indirect), as well as a number of positions in related or concurrent activities of local national companies and MYPES in the region . Likewise, these projects make it possible to reduce gaps and is an effective instrument to boost economic activity by generating synergies that promote private sector participation and economic growth.
SIMA PERÚ SA as the only State Company in the field of Naval Industry and Metal Mechanics of the Corporation of Public Companies of Peru, fulfills its objectives within the framework of efficient management, which allows it to become a key instrument in the execution for continuity of the State Investment projects, which will have a high impact on the attention to National Defense, in the face of natural disasters as a result of emergency situations and pandemics, being the main technological support for the Peruvian Navy.
