Bodo Liberation Tigers (BLT)

Bodo Liberation Tiger Force (BLTF) is a former terrorist group of Assam. Formed in 1996 and based in Bhutan and India. The last attack was on 24 March 2003. It is thought to be fully disbanded and it is unlikely that the group will re-emerge.

The Bodo Liberation Tigers (BLT) has negotiated with the Center and made peace. In February 2003, the Assamese government, the Bodo Liberation Tigers (BLT) and the Government signed a tripartite agreement to create the Bodoland Territorial Council, an autonomous self-governing body. The BLT and the All Bodo Students Union (ABSU) participated in polls for the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) on 13 May 2005, that would facilitate a sort of limited self-governance to Bodos in Kokrajhar, Baska, Udalguri and Chirang districts. The NDFB did not participate in the polls. The Bodo groups are disunited and the NDFB, now isolated, has come under pressure to make peace.

However, the Government of India may find it difficult to find an early solution to the problem with the NDFB still sticking to its demand for an independent Bodoland. If the outfit maintains this stand, the government may find it difficult to persuade them to accept more powers under the Indian constitution. Moreover, the BTC was created only in December 2003 after the signing of the peace pact between the Central and State governments and the erstwhile militant group Bodo Liberation Tigers (BLT). The NDFB and BLT are rivals and it will be difficult for the government to find any peace formula that will satisfy both groups.

The Bodos, a primitive tribe who are mostly either Hindus or Christians, account for about 10 percent of Assam's 26 million people and live in the western and northern parts of the state.

Founded by Prem Singh Brahma to safeguard the interests of the Bodo people living in Assam. The BLT favoured the creation of a ‘Bodo State’ independent from Assam but under the control and protection of the Indian Constitution. The BLT has agreed to abide by the rule of law. Six policemen and a home guard were killed on 29 June 1999 when suspected Bodo Liberation Tigers Force (BLTF) militants blew up two police cars using a remote-controlled device.
