Jinnah class Frigate

Jinnah class FrigateThe "Jinanh class" nomenclature is ambiguous. Some felt the name Jinnah class should have been reserved for when Pakistan made its own aircraft carrier, as with the American USS George Washington or French Charles de Gaulle. The Navy generally doesn't name a ship until they commission it, the "Jinnah-class" came from a PN officer who spoke to the media at IDEAS 2018. But it wasn't used officially after that, but the damage was done, and too many accounts of Pakistan's MILGEM project with the Jinnah nomnclature. If anything, since then, the PN referred to all 4 MILGEMs as 'corvettes,' and not frigates.

Founder of Nation, Quaid-i-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah was for Pakistan what Mahatma Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru combined were for modern India—inspirational father and first head of state. Muhammad Ali Jinnah, was the ?rst political leader to protest against the Salt Tax, calling it “iniquitous, unheard of in any other country”. Mohammad Ali Jinnah was the legislator who tabled the resolution calling upon tenders for the Government of India to be opened in India in rupees, rather than in England, in pounds as had been the practice. Yet it was the same Mohammad Ali Jinnah who brought about the partition of India. The Founder of Pakistan was an excellent lawyer with a charismatic personality. Muhammad Ali Jinnah, in 1896, became the youngest Indian to pass law examination in England. At a remarkable age of 20 Jinnah was the only Muslim Barrister in the city of Bombay. He would later go on to become of the most successful lawyers of his time.

Jawaharlal Nehru disliked Jinnah. The tragic clash of personalities and party platforms that initially pitted Jinnah against Gandhi escalated from a personal rivalry into a conflict of national and international proportions. Jinnah’s shrewd and skillful leadership combined brilliant advocacy and singular tenacity to win his suit for the creation of Pakistan on behalf of the ‘Muslim nation ’ — his sole client during the last, lonely, pain-filled decade of his life.

Karachi Shipyard & Engineering Works [KS&EW] will also build [5000-6000 ton?] Jinnah Class Frigates in the future. Pakistan has signed for MILGEM class corvettes with Turkey. Two corvettes will be built in Turkey and two in Pakistan with the Transfer of Technology from Turkey to Pakistan. The delivery of high-tech corvettes to the navy will be complete by 2024. These corvettes will be capable of anti-ship, anti-air and anti-submarine warfare. To take this cooperation to further highs, both are working on the designing of the Jinnah class frigate. Pakistan will own the intellectual property rights over the frigate. This means that Pakistan could manufacture more frigates of its own will in the future. The defense partnership in corvettes, their technology transfer, and designing of Jinnah class frigate paint a positive picture for Pakistan Navy’s fleet development.

The anti-access elements of the Pakistan Navy comprise of a series of warships, submarines, and anti-ship cruise missiles. It is in the process of acquiring four Type 054 Frigates, four Ada class corvettes under the project MILGEM, and two more Damen corvettes. The Jinnah class frigate is still in the design phase. The number of Jinnah-class ships would also be reportedly four. Navy is also interested in buying six heavier tonnage ships. These ships will be 5000+ in tonnage according to available reports. Heavier tonnage gives more endurance, firepower, and room for surface to air missiles. Ada class corvettes and Jinnah class frigates are part of Turkey’s MILGEM project. This project also includes a heavier tonnage TF-2000 frigate. The heavier frigate, therefore, could be based on TF-2000 or built with China’s cooperation.

The fourth and final PN MILGEM class corvette for the Pakistan Navy was laid down on 05 November 2021 at the Karachi Shipyard and Engineering Works (KS&EW) by ASFAT Inc, a contracting company affiliated with the Turkish Ministry of Defense. The ceremony for the fourth PN MILGEM class corvette was attended by dignitaries including Admiral Amjad Khan Niazi, Chief of the Pakistan Navy, and Esad Akgün, General Manager of ASFAT. Akgun also revealed in his speech that they have completed the design of the Jinnah class frigates for the Pakistan Navy. He stressed that Pakistan-Turkey cooperation has been developing with the Jinnah project, which has been in the design stage for two years. “The Jinnah-class frigate, to be built in Karachi, Pakistan, will be a larger and more capable ship that demonstrates the success of our culture of cooperation.” A model of the Jinnah class frigate was on display by ASFAT at the IDEF 2021 exhibition.

Pakistan’s MILGEM program calls for both modern ships and a proprietary frigate design. In terms of the latter, ASFAT A.S. will assist its Pakistani counterparts – i.e., Maritime Technologies Complex (MTC), Karachi Shipyards & Engineering Works (KSEW) and Navy Research and Development Institute (NRDI) – in designing a frigate for the PN. The PN will also own the intellectual property (IP) rights of the frigate.

Neither ASFAT A.S. or the PN have yet revealed the actual dimensions/measurements of the Jinnah-class (as it is a modified version of the Ada-class). ASFAT A.S. will assist Pakistan in designing an original frigate. In 2018, a PN official said the fourth ship will be “the first Jinnah-class frigate,” but Turkish defence media have indicated the entire line of ships are of the Jinnah-class. However, either way, the fourth ship will be different from the first three vessels. In October 2020, the PN CNS confirmed that the Jinnah-class frigate will actually be a new line of ships separate of the four modified corvettes.
