Military Garrison Commands [Guarnición Militar]
There were 23 garrison commands [Guarnición Militar] in 2010, an increase from the 16 in existence in 1993, which were mainly in Mexico's northern border region. They were initially established during the mid-19th century as border outposts. As of 1993, the US Army's classified assessment was that "they appear to function as administrative outposts to assist in border related issues". These posts are normally commanded by brigadier generals.
