Type 90 Tank Recovery Vehicle

Based on the Type 90 tank, the Type 90 Tank Recovery Vehicle is used for field collection and service work of tanks. The Type 90 tank recovery vehicle is a tank recovery vehicle made by diverting the body of the Type 90 tank, and was developed as a successor to the Type 78 tank recovery vehicle that had been deployed with the introduction of the Type 90 tank.

When a new tank is developed, a tank recovery vehicle is created almost at the same time to repair and recover tanks that are incapacitated or broken down in the operational area. The Type 90 tank recovery vehicle was also issued in the same way, and is a recovery vehicle that was formalized in 1990, the same as the tank. Manufactured by the same Mitsubishi Heavy Industries as the tanks to be recovered.

The body is developed based on the 90 type tank, and the suspension and other undercarriage are left as they are, but the turret part is removed and a recovery device is installed. For this reason, it has a speed of 70km/h, which is equivalent to a tank, and has the ability to run on rough terrain, so it can act together with armored units. A box-shaped cockpit is provided on the left side of the vehicle body as a configuration such as a recovery device, and there is a side opening door on the side, from which you can quickly get on and off during recovery work.

The main hydraulic winch mounted on the front of the hull supports the towing of 50 tons, which is the weight of the Type 90 tank, and the Type 74 tank can be pulled sideways. The towing capacity of the winch alone is about 30 tons, and by using the pulley mounted on the rear left of the vehicle as a movable pulley to pull on a double line, the towing capacity is doubled.

There is a telescopic large crane on the right side of the cockpit, a winch at the rear of the car body, and a spade at the bottom of the front part of the car body that is used to fix the car body by sticking it into the ground when lifting it. This is almost the same equipment arrangement as the Type 78 tank recovery vehicle , but the smoke grenade launcher has been changed from the right side of the front of the vehicle to the front of the cockpit.

The crane on top of the car body has a lifting capacity of 25 tons or more, and is used for exchanging power packs and gun barrels, separating the turret and car body, etc. The upper part of the engine room is also equipped with a pedestal that can mount the power pack of the 90 type tank and a replacement gun barrel. There is a hook for towing on the rear part of the car body, and it is possible to tow a 90 type tank and run. Unlike the 90-type tank, the suspension is all hydraulic suspension, and it is possible to control the vertical attitude, and when using a winch or crane, the vehicle height is lowered to the minimum. For self-defense, it is equipped with an M2 12.7mm machine gun and a smoke grenade launcher.

The recovery performance is about double that of the Type 78 tank recovery vehicle in order to support the weight of the Type 90 tank, the winch has a pulling power of 50 tons, the wire length is 120 m, and the lifting capacity of the crane has increased by 5 tons to 25 tons. In addition, spare engines and gun barrels for tank replacement can be mounted on the rear of the vehicle, just like the Type 78 tank recovery vehicle, and can be lifted by the equipped crane for replacement work.

About 30 vehicles were procured by FY2010. The tank direct support unit of the Northern Army (Hokkaido), which operates the 90 type tank, is mainly deployed, and about 30 cars have been produced so far.
