DDH Shirane Class
The Maritime Self Defense Force first system warship, presently Shirane type serves as the flagship of two of the Escort Flotilla. The DDH 143 Shirane Helicoper Destroyer expands and improves the design of the DDH 141 Haruna type helicopter guard defense warship, which similarly can load 3 helicopters. In addition, this is the first Japanese warship to carry a three-dimensional radar. Because it is designed from beginning as a system warship with an improved digital computer that unified various weapons systems, the Shirane type features air defense ability and communication capabilities which are improved markedly.
The lead unit is the DDH 143 Shirane, but there are minor differences wi th the second unit -- the 144 Kurama -- with the number of crew (for the 144 Kurama 360) and speed (for the 144 Kurama knots) and other minor differences. Now both have the 20 millimeter CIWS which has the impression of standard equipment, but the fact that this first was equipped on the 144 Kurama. Furthermore, the Shirane underwent modernization repair construction in 1984.
