Deep-Sea Reactor X [DRX]

A conceptual design was progressing at the Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute in the early 1990s for a deep-sea marine reactor DRX (Deep-Sea Reactor X). This reactor would have a small thermal output of 750 kW (electric output of 150 kW) and would be similar to but simpler than the MRX. The structure is featured by containing the reactor and power generating equipment (steam trubine and direct-coupled generator) in one pressure hul1 (containment) filled with water.

In 1997, the trend of the deep-sea and oceanographic research and development and arrangement of requested items (including the prospects at present and in near future), clarification of the images of the deepsea and the undersea navigation observation ship, and the requested items for the DRX were examined. The oceanographic research ship or undersea navigation observation ship should be designed to fit to utilization by the researchers in the field of global environment, ocean physics, and ocean biography. The design of the hull and the DRX reflected opinions of famed oceanographic researchers.
