Type 10 MBT-X - Program

The Type 10 tank is the 4th generation main battle tank of the Ground Self-Defense Force, which was formalized in 2010, and is generally classified as the 3.5th generation main battle tank after the war. It is read as "Hitomaru Shiki". Before formalization, it was commonly known as TK-X. Four prototypes were built, the first prototype was delivered in January 2006, and the second prototype was shown to the press for the first time on February 13, 2008.

The GSDF's Type 90 tank were mainly deployed in Hokkaido, and other than that, they are deployed only in the Fuji training corps. For this reason, the main battle tank on Honshu was the Type 74 tank , which was one generation ago , and a 40-ton class light tank was eagerly awaited to replace it. Then, as a successor to the existing tank, while suppressing expenses including life cycle costs, would improve firepower, protection power, mobility, etc., and advanced C4I connection (networking) corresponding to the IT revolution, Japan would develop a new tank with information sharing and command and control capabilities.” It can be said that it is a very ambitious design to realize.

Development began in 1996 in the form of prototype research for future artillery and ammunition and future vehicle equipment, and various prototypes were made from 2002 to 2008. Mass production has been started at Mitsubishi Heavy Industries since 2010, and 13 units for the first year procurement have been delivered by March 30, 2012, and the unit deployment is proceeding at the same pace every year.

The development cost is 48.4 billion yen, and the target price per unit is said to be about 700 million yen, which is quite cheap considering that the current Type 90 tank costs about 800 million yen. The unit price per unit in the first year of procurement was about 950 million yen, and considering that the initial procurement price of the Type 90 tank was 1.1 billion yen, it can be said that the price of the Type 10 tank is relatively suppressed.

Prototype No. 1 is on display at the Ground Self-Defense Force Asaka Public Relations Center, Prototype No. 2 is on display at the Weapons School in Tsuchiura, Prototype No. 3 equipped with a dozer is on display at Fuji School, and Prototype No. 4 is on land at the Ministry of Defense Technical Research Headquarters. Owned by the Equipment Research Institute. In addition, a prototype of the derived type 11 tracked vehicle recovery vehicle was made separately from this.
