AGS Futami Class
The AGS Futami class is the 2nd generation Oceanographic Research Ship of JMSDF that was built during the 3rd defense plan and it was aimed especially to strengthen the sound surveillance capability. The mission of the AGS Futami class is to collect and analyze data, such as weather, current, submarine topography, water quality, and geomagnetism, in order to make maritime defense more effective. To perform detailed survey, it is equipped with a variable pitch propeller which enables the ship to navigate at low speed (2-3 knots) for a long time. It is also equipped with an anti-rolling tank to make observation easy during rough weather. Other equipment includes bow thruster to maintain the ship position, and it was paid particular attention to reduce the sound of power generator in order to lessen noise when performing sound observation.
