Yiftach Brigade
The Yiftach Brigade was one of three brigades formed from Palmach battalions leading up to Israel's War of Independence in 1948. During the war, the Yiftach Brigade was responsible for the Galilee area and was under the command of Colonel "Mula" Cohen. In the early stages of the war, the Yiftach Brigade conducted successful surprise offensives against Lebanese and Syrian forces in northern Israel.
The brigade also played an important role in Operation Danny, the primary objective of which was to strike a decisive blow against Arab Legion forces. In October 1948, the Yiftach Brigade took part in Operation Yoav that was focused on combating Egyptian troops in southern Israel. Although the 8th armored brigade suffered initial losses, the Yiftach Brigade succeeded in moving into a position that had the Egyptian force almost surrounded.
