The Gaza Division has been primarily responsible for conducting operations in the Gaza Strip. In March 2003, the division was under the command of Brigadier General Gadi Shamni who was responsible for carrying out attacks against Palestinian positions in the Jabalya refugee camp. During the operation, Israeli troops discovered several pieces of weapons manufacturing equipment.
In early November 2004, Brigadier General Shmuel Zakai was dismissed as division commander after losing credibility by allegedly leaking information to the media. Zakai submitted a letter of resignation, and after being completely discharged, was replaced by Brigadier General Aviv Kochavi. Before his appointment, Kochavi commanded the Israeli Army's Fire Division.
