Swift Mk II/III Patrol Boat

Iran purchased a number of inshore patrol boats of different types during the mid-1970s. These craft were, on average, larger than the smaller "Boghammar" types acquired later, but smaller than the Kaivan and Parvin class patrol boats then in service.

The three most prominent types were the Swift Mk II and III, and a 50-ft class boat produced by Peterson Builders (termed a PBI or Inshore Patrol Boat). The Swift Mk II was a stretched version of the Vietnam era PCF "Swift boat," 26 of which were ordered by Iran between 1976 and 1977. These were delivered unarmed, and were armed in Iran. A number were lost during the Iran-Iraq War, including a number of unassembled kits.

Though often referred to as a "Swift" boat, the PB Mk III bears little resemblance to the earlier boats. Also built by Marinette Marine, the Mk III was adopted by the US Navy as a special warfare craft, and had the potential to be utilized in mine laying, mine sweeping, and a variety of other missions. Iran purchased 20 of these boats between 1975 and 1976, of which 11 survived the Iran-Iraq war. More lightly armed than their US counterparts, Iranian Mk III's had replaced their forward 12.7mm machine gun with a 20mm cannon by 1995.

Last of the types was the Peterson PBI, a 50-ft class patrol boat of which 61 were ordered by Iran in 1976. Entering service between 1976 and 1978, many were lost in the Iran Iraq War. An estimated 20 survived, which were handed over to the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy in 1990.

Iran continues to operate a number of boats in these classes, but with the push began at the end of the 1990s toward self-sufficiency in military industry, it has become increasingly difficult to separate the various types. Swift Mk II/III and Peterson PBIs were specifically listed as in active service as of 2007. As of 2008 the Iranians had some 60 or more boats in the Patrol Boat and Inshore Patrol Boat categories.
