The Jewish-Bolshevist Conspiracy

The myth of 'Judeo-Communism' in Europe during the early 20th Century has been characterized by Andre Gerrits as "one of the most potent myths in East European politics." Arnold Toynbee wrote: "The distinctively Jewish .. inspiration of Marxism, is the apocalyptic vision of a violent revolution which is inevitable because it is the decree .. of God himself, and which is to invert the present roles of Proletariat and Dominant Minority in .. a reversal of roles which is to carry the Chosen People, at one bound, from the lowest to the highest place in the Kingdom of This World. Marx has taken the Goddess "Historical Necessity" in place of Yahweh for his omnipotent deity, and the internal proletariat of the modern Western World in place of Jewry; and his Messianic Kingdom is conceived as a Dictatorship of the Proletariat. But the salient features of the traditional Jewish apocalypse protrude through this threadbare disguise, and it is actually the pre-Rabbinical Maccabaean Judaism that our philosopher-impresario is presenting in modern Western costume..."

There had always been at the back of the anti-Semitic mind an uneasy feeling that the Jews were, as the old law books say, perpetui inimici Regis et Religionis. Its fundamental contention is that all political unrest is artificial. It is a product of the Hidden Hand which is now revealed as a "Formidable Sect" encompassing the world. This sect was said to have been at its present work for at least a hundred and fifty years [that is, since about the year 1750]. The French Revolution was contrived by it, as well as all the subordinate revolutions down to our own time. Trade Unionism, Socialism, Syndicalism, Bolshevism, Sinn Fein, Indian Nationalism, and their analogs in every part of the globe are outward and visible signs of its sinister activity. That there are social grievances and even evils at the root of this unrest is not denied, but they are as artificial as the unrest itself. They have all been deliberately brought about by the Hidden Hand in order to stir up revolt against the Throne and Altar.

The way in which it has been done is a little complicated. Behind the restless and seditious movements there was said to be a secret revolutionary organisation in the shape of Freemasonry. But this was only intermediate, for Freemasonry itself, through some obscure transaction between the Templars and the Old Man of the Mountain, was created by the "Formidable Sect," and is wholly, though perhaps unconsciously, under its control. Freemasonry had a specially "activist" wing in the Illuminati - also an invention of the Formidablists - which was chiefly responsible for the French Revolution.

Now, what was this "Formidable Sect"? It was no other than the Jews. Those "ancient enemies of the human race" appeared to have been even more daring and dynamic in evil-doing than even Torquemada supposed. Throughout their world-wide Dispersion they were said to have secretly preserved their old political organisation, and they used it - and were still using it - with deadly persistency to overturn the established Christian order of things and to found in its place a universal Jewish dominion under the sceptre of a Sovereign of the House of David. The Jews were, in short, the "cause of the world unrest."

The theory was first propounded by a Superior of the Seminary of Eudists at Caen in 1790, but it was afterwards vastly developed by the Abbe" Barruel in his "Memoires sur le Jacobinisme," by Robison of Edinburgh in his "Proofs of a Conspiracy," and by the Chevalier de Malet in his tedious "Recherches Historiques." Their conclusion was that there was a triple conspiracy of Philosophers, Freemasons, and Illuminati, who formed an actual sect aiming deliberately and methodically at the overthrow of the established religions and governments throughout Europe.

The participation in the bourgeois Revolutions of 1830 and 1848 gave political point to this superstition, and ever since it has been a favourite theory of the more fanatical reactionaries that the whole Democratic movement in Europe is a Jewish conspiracy for the subversion of Christianity and Christian society.

This conspiracy theory was revived in the 1860s under the influence of the religious passions kindled by the war for Italian unity. The struggle for Jewish emancipation had triumphed all over Western Europe, largely as a consequence of the Revolutions of 1848, and the new citizens thus enfranchised had everywhere cast in their lot with the Liberal parties. This was swiftly and angrily noted by the Ultramontane polemists, and the old bogey of a "Formidable Sect" began to haunt them in a revised and enlarged form. In the new conspiracy there was no longer any talk of Philosophers and Illuminati. Their place was taken by Jews and Protestants. The "Formidable Sect" thus became a triple alliance of Freemasons, Jews, and Protestants.

Thus, when Bolshevism arose, it was quite in the line of traditional Russian policy to denounce it as the work of the Jews. From the reactionary camps of Deniken and Koltchak, and even from the Allied armies in the North, where the Intelligence and Propaganda Services were necessarily in the hands of Russian officers of the old Tsarist rigime, the country was flooded with pamphlets and broadsheets declaring that Bolshevism was a Jewish plot, and that the aim of those who were making war on it was not to fight their Russian brothers, but to deliver them from their Jewish bondage. It was, however, in Germany that the bogey was adapted for consumption in Western Europe. The old Junker anti-Semitism received a great impulse from the collapse of thrones which followed the Armistice of 1918. All the revolutionary movements were at once attributed by them to the Jews, and, by way of showing the victorious Allies the danger they were courting by tolerating them, bloodcurdling pictures of Russian Bolshevism as the first fruits of an international Jewish conspiracy were issued.

The protocols and world revolution: including a translation and analysis argued that "That the Bolshevist revolution was from the beginning almost entirely led and controlled by Jews is a fact which has gradually thrust itself upon the attention of the world. The Jews in many instances have admitted the dominating role which members of their race have played in international Bolshevism and have sought to defend it. Some of their recognized leaders have proclaimed their pride in Trotzky. The fact that the Jewish race has taken such an active part in the Russian Bolshevist movement, with its international ramifications, has been attributed in some quarters to the motive of revenge on the part of the Jews for what they regard as a long era of persecution. If this be so, is it impossible that Jews in various parts of the world imagine that now is their chance not only for revenge but for world domination ?"

There is no evidence that Jews were involved in the Bolshevik Revolution because they were Jewish. There may have been a higher proportion of Jews involved, but given Tsarist treatment of Jews, what else would be expected? Winston Churchill's statement that Jews had a "very great role" in the Bolshevik Revolution is supported only by distorted evidence. The list of a few Jews involved in the Bolshevik Revolution must be weighed against much longer lists of non-Jews involved in the revolution.

In February 1920 Winston Churchill wrote an article for the London Illustrated Sunday Herald entitled "Zionism Versus Bolshevism." In this article Churchill wrote "Some people like Jews and some do not; but no thoughtful man can doubt the fact that they are beyond all question the most formidable and the most remarkable race which has ever appeared in the world.... There is no need to exaggerate the part played in the creation of Bolshevism and the actual bringing about of the Russian Revolution by these international and for the most part atheistical Jews.... With the notable exception of Lenin, the majority of the leading figures are Jews.... From the days of Spartacus-Weishaupt to those of Karl Marx, and down to Trotsky (Russia), Bela Kun (Hungary), Rosa Luxembourg (Germany), and Emma Goldman (United States), this world-wide conspiracy for the overthrow of civilisation ... has been steadily growing... It played ... a definitely recognisable part in the tragedy of the French Revolution. It has been the mainspring of every subversive movement during the Nineteenth Century; and now at last this band of extraordinary personalities from the underworld of the great cities of Europe and America have gripped the Russian people [and] become practically the undisputed masters of that enormous empire. .. schemes of a world-wide communistic State under Jewish domination."

These crazy theories played a part behind the scenes in the international combinations for assisting the anti-Bolshevist reaction in Russia. There was a moment when the Great Powers were disposed to leave the Russians to fight out their quarrels among themselves. Various objections to this policy were urged by the friends of Admiral Koltchak and General Denikin, and among them was the argument that there was, in fact, no civil war in Russia, that Bolshevism was not Russian, but exclusively alien, the work of international Jews who were themselves the instruments of a world-wide and deeplaid Jewish conspiracy against Christendom and the political order of Europe. Bolshevism was, in short, a European menace. Russia was pictured as the first instalment of the Jewish conquest of Europe, which had already sent its agents to Berlin, Dresden, Vienna, and Budapest, whence they were advancing to the Rhine and the Alps. In support of this argument, Russian Intelligence Officers, armed with doctored typewritten translations of the Nilus Protocols, with the anti-British passages carefully expunged, were sent to London, Paris, Rome, and Washington, where they circulated this precious literature confidentially among Cabinet Ministers, heads of public departments, and persons of influence in society and journalism.

The anti-Semitic press of both hemispheres charged that Bolshevism in Russia and elsewhere was a movement instigated and led by Jews, as part of a great conspiracy to bring about the Jewish domination of the world. The reasons for making this charge were only too obvious. Bolshevism was repugnant to the great mass of civilized mankind, by whom it was regarded as a sort of moral leprosy. Whatever may be thought of the possibility of Sovietism in industry and government, Bolshevism, the spiritual dynamic as distinguished from the mechanical agent, was the negation of every virtuous principle which mankind held in reverence. It frankly based government upon brute force wielded by the few.

The ultra-rightists mouthed about a Jewish-Bolshevik plot, and many were ready to believe in the world-Jewish-Bolshevik conspiracy as a way of venting anxiety and resentment. Henry Ford's Dearborn Independent claimed that "the Jews of Russia came up in a perfect phalanx" after the overthrow of tsarism. When it was noted that there are a few Jews holding prominent positions in the Bolshevist regime, the whole race is stigmatized and charged with being engaged in a conspiracy to destroy civilization; but when attention is called to the fact that other Jews, far more numerous, are engaged in fighting Bolshevism and attempting to save civilization, no credit for that fact is given.

Ford's Dearborn Independent, in its issue of May 29, 1920, this organ of American anti-Semitism desperately tries to bolster up the charge that nearly all the leaders of the Bolsheviki are Jews by a clumsy invention of its own. It says: "Every commisar in Russia to-day is a Jew. Publicists are accustomed to speak of Russia as if it were in disorder, but the Jewish government of Russia is not. From a mass of underlings, the Jews of Russia came up in a perfect phalanx, a flying wedge through the superinduced disorder, as if every man's place had been previously prepared for him." For these statements there is no justification in fact.

Bolshevism stood condemned in 1918 as the figurative Beast of Revelations, the predicted Antichrist that should aim at the overthrow of all Christian civilization, setting up in its stead the abomination of atheism and of anarchy in a godless world. This seeming eruption of Satanism in Russia was said to have its echo in America among a group of apostate Jews - men who had forsaken the religion and the teachings of their fathers and scoffed at all things religious.

The final argument of the anti-Semitic scaremongers was the Judeo-Bolshevik bogey. The authenticity of the Protocols of the Elders Zion was suspect, but the Bolshevism of the Jews was asserted to be an incontrovertible fact, which proves that both the theory and its documents are morally justifiable. Were it not for its very tragical possibilities, the evocation of this bogey would be a fit subject for mirth, or, at best, a problem for the folk-lorist or the student of corporate hallucination. As it is, it is a very serious matter, seeing that the lives of millions of innocent persons were jeopardised by it.

The bogey took the specific form of a charge against the Jews of Russia and Poland that they were for the most part Bolsheviks, and that the Bolshevist revolution was engineered by them and was controlled and directed by them. The only evidence cited in support of it was that Trotsky and a few of the more prominent Bolshevist commissaries are men of Jewish birth, and that a similar element on an even more restricted scale was found in certain of the Soviets. But those men were no more Jews than Lenin, Lunacharsky, Chicherin, and the great bulk of the Russian Bolsheviks are Christians.

In that shameful book, The Cause of World Unrest, consisting of articles reprinted from the London Morning Post, the anonymous author gives a list of fifty names of "persons who either are the actual governing powers in Soviet Russia now or were responsible for the establishment of the present regime there." The compiler of the list was not honest; he did not intend to place the reader in possession of the truth. This is evidenced by several facts. In the first place, many influential leaders of the Bolsheviki whose names are familiar to all who have given even ordinary attention to the subject are conspicuously absent. The reason for the omission is that these men are non-Jews. Their inclusion in the list would have destroyed the author's charge. He has suppressed important facts in the interest of his wretched case.

One would search the list in vain for the names of such prominent leaders of the Bolshevist movement as Bucharin, Rakovsky, Miliutin, Raskolnikov, Shliapnikov, Latzis, Rykov, Stalin, Krestinsky, Bonch-Brouyevich, Dybenko, Dzerzhinsky, Krylenko, Gorky, Andreyeva, Nogin, Platakov, Kalinin, Boky, and many others less well known. Manouilsky, number forty-six on the list, is described as a Jew, whereas it is well known that he is a Gentile, a Ukrainian. Bogdanov, number ten on the list, is likewise wrongfully described. His real name is not Silberstein, as alleged, but Malinovsky. Neither is he a Jew, as alleged, but a Gentile, a Russian.

Many of the old Bolsheviks were Jewish, Leon Trotsky, Lev Kamenev, Gregory Zinoviev, Lazar Kaganovich, Maxim Litvinov, Yakov Sverdlov, Polina Zhemchuzhina (the wife of Molotov), etc. Jewish communists, such as the legendary founder of the Cheka, Felix Dzerzhinsky, and his successors, Abram Slutsky, Sergei Shpigelglas, and Genrikh Yagoda, had led the intelligence and security organs of the Bolsheviks and subsequently the Soviet state. And there were still many Jewish cadres in the cultural organs, the Party, the intelligence services, and the security apparatus.

  • Trotzky, who shared with Lnine the leadership of the movement, came of a wealthy Jewish family. His uncle, Jivotoffsky, was the purchasing agent for the Allies in Russia under the empire, and when his nephew assumed power, he was established in Sweden as the agent of the thievish Bolshevist leaders, selling Russian mines, boats and materials to the German Government after Trotzky had catalogued the loot. For some time prior to America's entrance in the War, Trotzky was engaged in editing a Jewish Socialist paper on the East Side of New York until the part-Jewish Emperor of Germany, William II, sent for him to wreck Russia with the weapon of Bolshevism.
  • Volodarsky, the Bolshevist Minister of Publicity, was a Philadelphia Jew, who went to Russia during Kerensky's regime.
  • Vriitzky, another Bolshevist leader, was a writer for a Jewish newspaper in Philadelphia. A foe to all religions, Vriitzky took particular pleasure in persecuting those Russian Jews who would take no part in the Bolshevist movement.
  • Rhinestone, the Bolshevist chief of propaganda, was a Jewish druggist in Buffalo, an atheist and a Socialist.
  • Kameneff, another Bolshevist cabinet officer, was Trotzky's brother-in-law.
  • Martoff, the Bolshevist Envoy to Siam, was a New York Jew of the well-known "Internationale" stripe.

The list of Jews holding prominent positions in either the Soviet government or the Communist party contains less than twenty names. It includes the names of Trotzky, Steklov, Zinoviev, Kamenev, Uritsky, Volodarsky, Sverdlov, Ganetsky, Helfandt (Parvus), Riazanov, Radek, Litvinov, Joffe, and Larin.

But Trotzky had many times declared that he was no Jew, but a "general proletarian," and Bela Kun, in a formal statement, declared himself to be opposed to all religions and national cultures, the Jewish included, and that he stood only for the economic interests of the proletariat. Dzerzhinsky, head of the infamous Extraordinary Commissions, is not a Jew. Lunarcharsky, who has charge of public education, is not a Jew. Rykov, chairman of the Economic Council, is not a Jew. Bonch-Brouyevich, secretary of the Council of People's Commissars, is not a Jew. Kolontai is not a Jewess. There are many other Gentile Commissars.

The universally known fact that there were Jews among the leaders of Bolshevism, in Russia and elsewhere, was not evidence that Bolshevism is essentially or primarily a Jewish movement; neither is it evidence that Bolshevism was a part of a Jewish conspiracy to obtain world domination. All that it proved was that which needs no proof - that there were Jews among the Bolsheviks. As to the part played by Jews in the Communist party and its numerous "attempts," the General League of German Anti-Communist Associations issued "Communism in Germany (the Truth about the Communist Conspiracy on the Eve of the National Revolution)" by Adolf Ehrt, an illustrated booklet detailing graphically the amazing atrocities, dynamitings, murders, intrigues and conspiracies of a Russo-Jewish fostered group. As these proponents of the class-war mounted in strength to a total of six million votes in 1932, the clashes were frequently in the nature of actual warfare. But many of the most dastardly deeds were perpetrated under the cover of secrecy, such as were the dynamitings by the Jew Max Holz in 1920. This booklet related the part played by the Jews Levine, Axelrod and Levien in the Munich "attempt" in 1919, in which ten poeple held as hostages were murdered: the activities of the Jews Keppenberger, Thalman, Zeutschel and Neumann in the Hamburg armed rising in 1923; also the subsequent mass risings and terrorism, and the final clash of February 1933, by which Germany was saved from such a ruthless Communism as Russia had seen.

One tract of the 1930s argued that "The Jews devoted particular attention to the task of winning over the broad masses of the workers. In doing so, they achieved considerable success through the instrumentality of the Marxist doctrine, set up by the Jew Karl Marx, whose real name was Mardochai. Another Jew, Ferdinand Lasalle, was the founder of the Social Democratic party. The founders of the Independent Socialist party, too, were Jews, and so were the leaders of the Communist party. Jews were represented on the official press bureaus, on the editorial chairs of the papers published by the political parties, and - above all - in the various parliaments. In 1928, the Social Democratic party was entitled to 39 representatives in the committees of the Reichstag; 38 of them were Jews. ... The more the Jews were able to extend this advance by their skilful machinations, the more was the German people infected with the Communist virus. which was mainly introduced by the Jewish immigrants.... The setting fire to the Reichstag building in February 1933 was intended to serve as the signal for the Jewish-Bolshevist revolution carefully prepared for years."

A tract from 1934 concluded that " ... the more power the Jews attain, but the more does their conduct indicate ever more clearly what disastrous results we might expect should they gain any further ascendancy. For with not the least respect for our culture, our laws, or our morality, and even with his own Judaism grown rather thin, the Jew goes on and on toward a certain climax - that is fraught with tragedy, at least as the Gentiles see the outcome. Insane with a narrow racial urge for place and power, they are, more than any other people, impatient at poverty; and yet, if not successful, if they cannot pull themselves up, they become zealous to pull everyone else down, to a level in Communism."

Hitler wrote in Mein Kampf : " ... in exact proportion as, in the course of the War, the German worker and the German soldier fell back into the hands of the Marxist leaders, in exactly that proportion he was lost to the fatherland. If at the beginning of the war and during the War twelve or fifteen thousand of these Hebrew corrupters of the people had been held under poison gas, as happened to hundreds of thousands of our very best German workers in the field, the sacrifice of millions at the front would not have been in vain. On the contrary: twelve thousand scoundrels eliminated in time might have saved the lives of a million real Germans, valuable for the future. But it just happened to be in the line of bourgeois 'statesmanship' to subject millions to a bloody end on the battlefield without batting an eyelash, but to regard ten or twelve thousand traitors, profiteers, usurers, and swindlers as a sacred national treasure and openly proclaim their inviolability. We never know which is greater in this bourgeois world, the imbecility, weakness, and cowardice, or their deep-dyed corruption. It is truly a class doomed by Fate... "

In his speech "Communism with the Mask Off", delivered to the annual congress of the Nazi Party on 13 September 1935, Joseph Goebbels stated "The theory underlying this political and economic fanaticism was excogitated by a Jew named Karl Mordechai, alias Marx, the son of a Rabbi in Treves. A variant of the same theory sprang from the brain of another Jew called Ferdinand Lassalle. He was the son of the Jewish Chaim Wolfsohn from Loslau, who changed his name first to Losslauer and then to Lasel and finally to Lassalle."
