India's Western Naval Command (WNC) is headquartered in Mumbai. The command is equipped with submarine pens, a carrier dock and main dockyards. Nearby, in the Laccadive Islands, there is a patrol craft base. Binaga Bay, which lies between Mumbai and Cochin, is the home to Project Seabird, a new naval base that was developed to help relieve congestion at the naval base in Mumbai. It is expected that this new base will become the new headquarters for the Western Naval Command.
Along the western seaboard there are several shipbuilding facilities such as Mazagon Dock Ltd in Mumbai, and Goa Shipyard Ltd and Cochin Shipyard Ltd in Kerala. In addition, there is a naval war college in Karanja, which is located in the Wardha district of Maharashtra.
The WNC is a critical arm of the Indian Navy, as it provides naval defence in the Arabian Sea.
