Hindustan Shipyard Ltd.

Hindustan Shipyard Ltd. is a public sector undertaking under the Ministry of Surface Transport that builds and repairs commercial and naval combat ships. Hindustan Shipyard Limited (HSL) was established in the year 1941 by Scindia Steam Navigation Company. The Government of India took over the shipyard in the year 1952 and was corporatised in 1961. Hindustan Shipyard Limited (HSL) was taken over by the Ministry of Defence (MoD) in 2010. Hopes were raised for getting orders for landing platform docks each with a value of Rs. 4,000 crore, submarines and other warships from the Navy after it was taken over from the Ministry of Shipping, but as of mid-2013 this had not materialized. HSL had less than 10 percent of orders received by Garden Reach, one percent of Mazagaon and 35 percent of Goa Shipyard. The takeover of HSL from Ministry of Shipping by Ministry of Defence (MoD) had affected the order book position of the yard. After the takeover on February 22, 2010, no order had been placed on the yard.

Significantly, it was only after the country became independent in 1947, that the first ship 'Jala Usha" built in the shipyard at Visakhapatnam rolled off the slipways on the 14th March 1948 having been launched by the first Prime Minister of India, Sri Jawaharlal Nehru. Hindustan Shipyard Limited, Visakhapatnam, the pioneer shipbuilding yard in the country, started in 1943, owed its existence to the extraordinary vision, perseverance and drive of Shri Walchand Hirachand, the then Chairman of Scindia Steam Navigation Company Limited, who fought a relentless battle against the discriminating attitude in the sphere of indigenous shipping and shipbuilding by the Government of the day. The commencement of the yard symbolized the revival of the shipbuilding industry in modern form in India which in the ancient times was among the foremost maritime countries of the world.

Hindustan Shipyard Ltd is located in the picturesque port city of Visakhapatnam on the East coast of India. The shipyard is easily accessible by direct air, sea, rail and road connections from India and Abroad. The foundation stone of the shipyard was laid on June 22, 1941 by Dr. Rajendra Prasad who later became the first President of India. Today, HSL is a fully owned Government of India Undertaking under the Administrative control of the Ministry of Shipping, Road and Highways.
