Founded in 1996 under the vision of H.H. General Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, Abu Dhabi Ship Building offers comprehensive 24-hour marine services through its shipyard in the Abu Dhabi city of Mussafah. It follows global standards in its build, refit and maintenance projects and can work with steel, aluminium alloy and advanced composite materials. Abu Dhabi Ship Building (ADSB) was established in accordance with the vision of H.H. Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed to have a world-class facility in Abu Dhabi to support the U.A.E. Navy. ADSB specializes in the construction, repair and refit of naval, military and commercial vessels. The company boasts an impressive portfolio of build and refit projects that are collectively worth at least AED 3 billion.
Abu Dhabi Ship Building (ADSB) is a United Arab Emirates Public Joint Stock Company. Of the 211,992,000 shares outstanding, 40% is owned by Mubadala Development Company, 10% by the Government of Abu Dhabi and the remaining 50% by over 5,000 individuals. The company was founded in 1995 through cooperation between the Government of Abu Dhabi and Newport News Shipbuilding (NNS), the largest shipbuilder in the United States. At that time, NNS was also a major investor, having purchased 40% of the shares of the company. However, the UAE Government bought back 10% from NNS in 2001 and the other 30% in 2002. ADSB started as a pre-Offset venture, but both the Government and NNS later agreed to develop the business as a stand-alone public joint stock company. This was a groundbreaking achievement for the industrial sector of the UAE economy.
ADSB specialize in the construction of highly complex naval ships including the integration of weapon combat systems. These vessels are primarily designed for littoral warfare defence operations against air and surface threats as well as patrol tasks, coast guard, law enforcement, electronic search missions, fishery and EEZ protection. Products include Corvette Class Vessels, Missile Strike Craft and Fast Patrol Boats, Landing Craft & Logistic Support Ships as well as a variety of high speed Troop Carriers, Interceptors and Assault Boats. Construction materials used in the build of the above vessels includes Steel, Marine Grade Aluminium Alloy and Composites.

ADSB's Quality Management Systems are certified by Bureau Veritas Certification as meeting the requirements of ISO 9001:2008. The quality assurance and quality control functions are undertaken by the relevant sections within Quality Department to ensure that the overall company quality objectives are fulfilled and that product and services quality requirements are achieved.
Quality Policy is set by the senior management and followed down within the company. A fundamental element of the ADSB Quality Policy is that each employee is responsible for the quality of the work they do, ensuring that ADSB builds quality into its products and services from the outset. The Quality Department, by a process of audits and inspections, ensures both compliance with the company quality policy and conformity to the specific quality standards.Processes are governed by formal quality documentation. Performance of the quality systems is continually reviewed, and feedback oriented, to ensure that continuos improvements are implemented at the earliest opportunity.
ADSB takes very seriously its responsibility for creating and maintaining a safe working environment in the company. Accordingly, ADSB has gained OHSAS 18001:2007 Health and Safety Management accreditation. OHSAS 18001 is an international Occupational Health and Safety Management System which has been developed to help organizations to control occupational health and safety risks. By achieving and maintaining this standard, ADSB ensures that both its safety management systems and safety practices within the shipyard meet the highest international standards. ASDB has a permanent staff of trained and qualified safety personnel and fire fighting personnel, in addition to which there is a trained and well equipped emergency response force. ADSB also ensures that its activities comply with the environmental regulations for the business sector thus ensuring the impact on the environment as a result of its activities is minimized.
Abu Dhabi Systems Integration LLC (ADSI) was established in 2005 in Abu Dhabi, U.A.E. as a limited liability company wholly owned by its two parent companies, Abu Dhabi Ship Building PJSC (ADSB) and SELEX Sistemi Integrati (SELEX SI). Tapping the synergy of their combined competencies, capabilities and resources, ADSB and SELEX SI pooled their remarkable expertise to create a U.A.E.-based hub for electronic systems design, development, integration and maintenance. ADSI is the first company in GCC region to provide world-class system integration capabilities. ADSB saw the creation of ADSI as its natural extension that would leverage Abu Dhabi's growing expertise in the maritime sector and SELEX-SI's leadership in the definition and integration of systems for homeland defense, homeland security, coastal and maritime surveillance, air traffic management. ADSI, by combining a strong local presence with the most sophisticated sensor and software technology, intends to provide the latest in defense and civilian systems capabilities, while delivering highly superior service.
In 2011, the Company generated revenue of AED 1.3 Billion, which is the highest recorded in the 16 year history so far. It is also the third year in a row that revenue has exceeded Billion-Dirhams. The Consolidated Net Profit (before foreign exchange differences) is AED 56 million compared to AED 86 million in 2010. During 2011, the company worked on over 200 vessels building, refitting or repairing. ADSB still has strong contracts and is actively in discussions on major defense programs with key customers.
In February 2011 the first corvette warship built in the United Arab Emirates, was officially named "He sen" by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE, Ruler of Dubai, at the International Defense Exhibition (IDEX). Subsequently, two more vessels were launched; 'Dhafra' in April 2011 and then 'Mezyad' in February of20 12.
ADSB signed an important new contract with the UAE Armed Forces to provide Rolling Airframe Missiles for the 'Baynunah' vessels. In order to fulfill offset obligations resulting from this procurement, ADSB is in discussion and coordination with the supplier to establish an Intermediate Level Maintenance Facility for all missiles of this type in the country. With such a facility, the required missile recertification will be performed in Abu Dhabi thus saving the Government considerable time and cost, as well as ensuring enhanced knowledge transfer and capability within the country. Work on this project will be profitable and will have positive contribution to the overall company financial performance in the future.
The design and construction of twelve new 26.5m missile patrol vessels for the UAE Navy is another major project for which we have achieved significant progress in 2011. The first two vessels, built by our design partner in Sweden were launched and are now undergoing sea trials. ADSB is building the remaining and progress has been made on the hull construction and receipt of major equipment.
This project also includes the retrofitting of new weapons systems to twelve existing 24m aluminum 'Ghannatha' class troop carrying vessels, which were previously built by ADSB. Six will be retrofitted with a new 120 mrn mortar system and six with a new gun system.
The Critical National Infrastructure Contract covers the build and delivery of thirty-four 16m composite fast interceptor vessels to the Critical National Infrastructure Authority (CNIA). This project is progressing rapidly and has also made a significant contribution to our the company's financial results. The project is undertaken in cooperation with a design and co-production partner from Turkey. Twenty-two vessels are being produced in Abu Dhabi and the other twelve in Turkey. Eleven more vessels were delivered to the CNIA in 2011, which brings the total vessels delivered to seventeen. The remaining vessels were delivered in 2012 and 2013.
In addition to naval projects, the Company continues to successfully perform a steady flow of commercial ship repairs. with over 70 ships being completed for essential repairs works in 2011. ADSB continued to support the ADNOC operating companies ESNAAD and IRSHAD, through long-term support agreements, which have recently been renewed. The company plans to effectively utilise dry berth and wet berth capacity in the yard, ensuring both naval and commercial customer requirements are fulfilled.
In line with Abu Dhabi Vision 2030, ADSB is committed to the development of UAE Nationals through training and providing sustainable work opportunities. ADSB plans to achieve a high rate of Emiratisation offering attractive employment opportunities for UAE Citizens, with skills in the required fields.
