Type 216
The Type 216 submarine is a German -made submarine similar to the Type 212 and 214 . It is of a larger design aimed at meeting the needs of countries interested in this type of submarine such as India and Canada. HDW Class 216 Submarine is a long-range multi-mission two-deck fuel cell submarine with exceptional endurance. It features two pressure-tight compartments, high crew comfort levels and an extremely flexible payload for weapons and mission-orientated exchangeable equipment enhanced by the innovative Vertical Multi-Purpose Lock (VMPL).
The design was proposed for the Australian Navy's SEA 1000 requirement for a new diesel submarine to replace the six 3,000-ton Collins-class submarines built in the 1990s. Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull announced 26 April 2016 that he haf selected French shipbuilder DCNS as his partner for the joint development of the country's next submarine. Japan and Germany, which were competing with France for orders, were dropped. The project, which will switch collins-class submarines to new submarines due to retire by 2026 due to aging, has been under way for several years. With a total project cost of $39 billion, it will be australia's largest-ever defense procurement plan. The competition for orders for the project involved a public-private coalition formed by the Japanese government and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, as well as German shipbuilder ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems. Japan's chances of receiving orders were reported as the lowest of the three countries. The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) also reported that Japan was effectively out of selection, as there was considerable risk because he has little experience in manufacturing naval supplies overseas.
