TRG-122
Turkish Guided missiles are denoted by the “TRG” acronym followed by the diameter (in mm) of the missile: currently these are the TRG-122, TRG-230 and TRG-300 families as well as the BORA (KHAN) 610mm conventional SRBMs. Roketsan offers potential end users the freedom to select their transporter, whether a 6×6 or an 8×8 truck, and have it modified with four hydraulic jacks for holding up the bed and the launcher of choice. The 122mm launchers are arranged in the familiar 40 tubes that can be loaded manually or with a crane. The 122mm caliber is available in the TR-122, TRB-122, TRG-122, and TRLG-122 variants. The differences among them are slight improvements in accuracy and range. The TR-122/TRB-122/TRG-122/TRLG-122 are welcome alternatives to old Soviet-era Grad launchers.
The 122 mm TRG-122 Guided Rocket provides accurate and effective fire power on high priority targets within the ranges of 13-30 km. Roketsan added a guidance capability to 122 mm rocket systems, which is popular among the armed forces around the world, with the launch of the TRG-122. Boasting high accuracy, the TRG-122 enables its user to maintain heavy and effective fire on high-priority targets at ranges of 16–35 kilometers. The TRG-122 can provide timely and optimum fire support for maneuvering units, and can be launched from a T-122 SAKARYA Multi Barrel Rocket Launcher (MBRL) system or from other platforms with an interface permitting integration with Multi-Purpose MBRL System, which is also manufactured by Roketsan.
In September 2016, the Turkish munitions producer Roketsan introduced a satellite-guided artillery rocket for use from its T-122 Sakarya multiple rocket launcher system (MRLS). This new rocket – named TRG-122 – is derived from the 122mm TR-122-line of rockets, specifically the extended-range variant – which is capable of covering a distance of 40 km. According to IHS Jane’s, each TRG-122 weighs 72 kg (including an 18.4 kg high-explosive or fragmentation warhead). The customer has the option to supplement or supplant the GPS-based seeker with GNSS. The TRG-122’s accuracy is set at better thsn 50 m circular error probe (CEP). Roketsan hoped to have the TRG-122 ready for orders in 2017.
The scope of precision-guided munitions is evidently expanding. For a time, such munitions were limited to specialized munitions, such as stand-off range missiles, but with the increasingly affordable nature of guidance kits – especially GPS – the portfolio has broadened significantly. Today, one can include small and lightweight bombs, artillery shells, and artillery rockets.
