Damen Schelde Naval Shipbuilding
Royal Schelde
Koninklijke Schelde Groep BV (Royal Schelde Group)
Schelde Marinebouw BV

With over 125 years of industrial and shipbuilding history, but still innovative, Royal Schelde is part of the Damen Shipyards Group. Today Royal Schelde's main activity is Naval Shipbuilding. In fact Royal Schelde has been involved in most projects for the Royal Netherlands Navy's new surface combatants and support ships such as the Enforcer. Damen Schelde Naval Shipbuilding is a naval shipyard that makes optimal use of its know-how and experience from both the military and commercial sectors and is specialised in the design and construction of naval vessels and complex commercial vessels.

The Schelde River (in Dutch and German), Escaut (in French), the Scaldis of the Romans, rises in France, in the department of Aisne, and flows northward until, just on the border of Belgium and Holland, it separates into two principal arms, the Hond or West Schelde, and the East Schelde, by which it flows into the North Sea. The width of the river at Dendermonde is 600 feet, at Antwerp 1200 feet, at the mouth of the East Schelde 7 miles, and of the West Schelde nearly 10 miles. Ships of war in the 19th Century could get up to Antwerp, where the tide rises 12 feet. The navigation of the mouth of the Scbelde is seriously impeded by large sand-banks; but the traffic on all parts of the river is very great.

Royal Schelde was founded in the year 1875 and in April 2000 became a member of the Damen Shipyards Group. Damen Shipyards Group acquired Koninklijke Schelde Group [KSG], owner and operator of shipyards, from the Dutch government for the symbolic sum of 1 Dutch guilder.

The group consists of more than 30 major shipyards and operating companies around the world, has built more than 4,000 commercial and military vessels, currently employees nearly 8,500 skilled workers and has nearly EUR1,5 billion in annual turnover. Over the past years Damen Schelde Naval Shipbuilding has made great strides in efficiency, subcontracting a significant amount of work and now building more ships than before. Flexibility, Performance and Perfection has become our trade mark.

As the supplier of naval surface combatants and auxiliaries to the Royal Netherlands Navy, the yard has carried out over 50 years of continuous frigate and auxiliary vessel development which resulted in seven generations of frigates and four generation of auxiliary vessels.

Damen Schelde Naval Shipbuilding is part of the Damen Shipyards Group. This conglomerate of shipyards worldwide has increased activities in Naval Shipbuilding enormously. As part of the Damen group Schelde can make use of the shipbuilding know how and resources, that are directly available within the Damen group from various types of products ranging from tugs, workboats, cargo ships, inland waterway craft, fishing vessels, dredging equipment, ship repair, mega yachts and marine components.

With its new production facilities and adapted organisational approach in state-of-the-art shipbuilding Damen Schelde Naval Shipbuilding has every reason to look forward to a healthy continuation of its long tradition. Damen Schelde Naval Shipbuilding has two main construction and outfitting facilities, one in 'Vlissingen City' and one in the Industrial Area 'Vlissingen East'. The facilities of Damen Schelde Naval Shipbuilding have gone through a comprehensive restructuring and newbuilding process and can now be ranked among the highest standard available in the industry.
