Saab 2000

Saab made the 2000 which first flew in 1992, and is also still in use today, although more limited than it's 340 predecessor. The Saab 2000 is a unique aircraft. It delivers jet speed with turboprop economy. Equipped with 50 business class seats in a comfortable, spacious and unexpectedly quiet cabin, this modern airplane is the most flexible, high technology regional aircraft in the world. The aircraft possesses superior jet-like performance with a cruising speed at 370 kts and an unmatched hot and high short airfield capability. Rapid rates of climb and a service ceiling of 31,000 ft combine to provide a high degree of operational flexibility. Having these performance qualities in combination with turboprop economics, makes the Saab 2000 one of a kind. The Saab 2000 is available in three different versions: airliner, corporate and flight inspection. The Saab 2000 fleet has flown 1.1 million flight hours with 58 aircraft flying with 13 operators in 11 countries.

Saab Aircraft Leasing manages a portfolio of about 200 Saab 340 and Saab 2000 aircraft leased to 25 airlines around the world. With 35 employees, its head-office is in Washington, DC and regional offices in Stockholm Sweden and Tokyo Japan.

The Saab 2000 commuter is faster than the D0328, with a top speed of 365 kts (against 345 kts for the D0328). The main advantage of the 328S was the fact that it has much more in common with the 328 than the Saab 2000 had with its little brother, the 340B. The Swedish aircraft, for example, use different engines made by different companies. In this case, says Domier, the commonality aspect will win over those airlines which might have been tempted by the higher speed on the Saab 2000 compared to the 328.

For airlines, it is signi?cant to de?ne the minimum trip distance operation which is economically justifiable. Each airline works hard to have more income than operating costs. The more seats that exist in the aircraft, the longer the trip distance is required to operate economically. So for an aircraft with 30 passengerseats (D0328), the minimum range for economical operation is R;=75 NM whereas for an aircraft with 50 passenger seats (Saab 2000) R;=122 NM and for an aircra? with 70 passenger seats R;=149 NM.

By 2011 corrosion had been found on the rear spar upper cap of the horizontal stabilizer of SAAB 2000 aeroplanes. The affected areas are adjacent to the inboard elevator hinge where the electrical wiring harnesses are located and wired through the lightening holes. The upper spar cap is a primary structural element and is important to the structural integrity of the horizontal stabilizer. Corrosion damage in these areas, if not detected and corrected, can result in a starting point for future crack propagation, which would impair the integrity of the horizontal stabilizer upper spar cap structure.

The termination of the SAAB 2000 turbo prop aircraft production by SAAB AB came in 1999. This was part of Saab Aerostructures' repositioning during 1997-2008 from original equipment manufacturer (OEM) of regional aircraft (Saab 340 and Saab 2000) to 1st-tier subsystem supplier under Airbus and Boeing. Saab Aircraft is located in Linköping, Sweden and manufactured commercial and military aircraft. Its primary products were commercial turbo-prop and jet-prop aircraft (Saab 340 and Saab 2000) and the JAS 39 Gripen combat aircraft.
