S-300PMU SA-10 GRUMBLE
The mobile multi-channel anti-aircraft missile system S-300P is intended for the defense of important objects of the state against a mass attack by current and prospective means of air attack in conditions of active and passive interference. Among these assets, we include strategic and tactical aviation aircraft, strategic missiles with a flat flight path, aerial guided missiles, tactical and operational-tactical ballistic guided missiles in the entire range of their combat capabilities.
After the news 08 April 2022 that it secretly delivered the S-300 air defense system to Ukraine, Slovakia gained significant visibility. The most evidence of this is the news in the world media, where it is already widely written about and the information spreads very quickly. The news was also enriched by the sudden admission of Prime Minister Eduard Heger (OLaNO) that such a secret transfer of the convoy, which lasted for 2 days, really took place and the system was successfully transferred to Ukraine. Heger announced the transfer of the S-300 on a train to Kyiv.
The Ministry of Defence confirmed that Slovakia had provided its S-300 air defence system to Ukraine. This comes in reaction to Ukraine's request for assistance as an exercise of self-defence in line with Article 51 of the UN Charter as a direct consequence of Russia's armed aggression. "This is a responsible decision by which the Slovak Republic, as a country that supports peace, freedom and the protection of human rights, is providing assistance to Ukraine and its innocent citizens in the form of a purely defensive system, while we believe this system will help save as many innocent Ukrainians as possible from further aggression by Putin's regime."
Defence Minister Jaroslav Nad said: “The security of the Slovak Republic and our citizens remains uppermost in our thoughts, which is why we took this step only at a time when we had an adequate replacement for the S-300 system confirmed, just as we had announced before. This will be the fourth battery from our Allies of one of the most advanced air defence systems – Patriot, with which the territory of the Slovak Republic will thus be covered. Given that the Soviet-era S-300 system's options for maintenance services are reduced to a minimum and service life is nearing its end, this is great news for Slovakia and, at the same time, big help for Ukraine.” The donation of the S-300 system to Ukraine does not mean that the Slovak Republic has become part of the armed conflict in Ukraine. The defence capability of the Slovak Republic continues to be secured and will be strengthened by the fourth Patriot battery, which is due to arrive in Slovakia next week and will be deployed on Slovak territory for as long as necessary.
The S-300 PMU is designed for destruction of current and prospective aircraft of all types (including Stealth type), control-missiles with a flat flight path, soko precision weapons (guided missilesand air-to-ground bombs of various typesdetermination and method of guidance and othersmeans of air attack inthe entire range of their practical use in conditions of intensive activity by the opponent (radio-electronic interferencea pod.).
The S-300 air defense systems are capable of shooting down aircraft, cruise missiles and ballistic missile warheads at a distance of over 150 kilometers and at an altitude of almost 30,000 meters. In addition to the airspace, the S-300 anti-aircraft missile system is also capable of protecting strategic objects of the Slovak Republic, such as nuclear power plants or a strategic area such as the capital. In times of crisis and war, it serves as an additional means within the NATO airspace joint protection system. Since it primarily fulfills a role in the defense security system of the Slovak Republic, its deployability is a secondary role.
The S-300 PMU system consists of: three (max) anti-aircraft missile complexes (PLRK) 90Z6-1. The complex is the basefire unit (armed by the Armed Forces of the Slovak Republic there is 1 unit), a technical complex of security (KTO) 96C6, a means of technical battery, set of anti-aircraft guided missiles (PLRR) of type 5V55K and 5V55R. In the armament of the Slovak Armed Forces there weare rockets of the type 5V55R) and finally a set of replacementof ZIP-2 parts and the laboratory for repair of digital devices 12Ju6.
Anti-aircraft missile complex 90Z6-1 consists of a radar radiation and guidance (RON) 30N6-1, four launch complexes 83P6 (each with three launchers 5P85), radar to find low-flying targets 76N6 (usual Russian abbreviation NVO), topo-connector 1T12 on a GAZ-66T vehicle, spare parts sets ZIP-1B soperational documentation, additional energy resources security 99E6U and 94E6U, as well as overview radar remote-measure of type ST-68UM (36D6).
For the first time in history, on 27 August 2015 the soldiers fired live shots from the S-300 anti-aircraft missile system, which has been in service with the armed forces since the division of Czechoslovakia. However, it is one of the most modern means of fire for air defense, which fulfills an important role in the complex system of its security.
"For the first time, our armed forces were able to test what they have practiced. I would like to congratulate them, as well as my Bulgarian colleagues, on the good results they achieved during this exercise," said Minister of Defense Martin Glvác. At the same time, he emphasized that we will also invite the Bulgarian armed forces to our exercises, so that the soldiers can practice cooperation in other areas, especially in the field of ground forces.
Bulgarian Defense Minister Nikolay N. Nenchev appreciated how much progress the armed forces made during this exercise. "The level of preparation is really high, but I believe that we will never have to actually deploy these funds," he said.
As stated by the Chief of the General Staff of the Slovak Armed Forces, Lt. Gen. Milan Maxim is absolutely satisfied with the result of sharp shooting. "And I didn't even go here worrying that the soldiers wouldn't be sufficiently prepared. However, of course something could have happened with the technique. That's why I'm glad that it turned out that the procedures we chose for its maintenance over those 24 years were correct and everything works as it should," he emphasized.
"You can't describe something like this, you have to experience it. It requires hours of training and honest preparation, which we completed," the commander of the exercise, Lt. Col. Peter Janota, assessed after the exercise.
As confirmed 17 March 2023 by the Prime Minister of the Slovak Republic, Eduard Heger, Slovakia provides MiGs to Ukraine to protect civilians from a large number of bombs."Just as the S-300 system we provided saved thousands of lives, so will these fighter jets save thousands of lives," he said. At the same time, he rejected nonsensical claims that this step is dragging Slovakia into war. "It is not so, the Slovak Republic is part of the strongest defense alliance in the world - NATO, and thanks to this alliance we are protected better than we have ever been in the history of the Slovak Republic and we will be even better," he emphasized.
