Democrat Liberal Party (PD-L) Democratic Party (PD)
The Democratic Party (PD) was essentially a center-right party, with an urban, middle class constituency. A formal break with left-of-center social democratic ideology would allow the PD to distinguish itself more clearly from its arch-rival -- the former ruling Social Democratic Party (PSD), from whose predecessor the PD split in spring 1992.
While the late-2007 merger of Basescu's Democratic Party (PD) and the PLD into the PD-L had not met the high expectations that surrounded its formation, the merger had nevertheless resulted in the addition of many high-profile PLD politicians including Stolojan and Stoica, and the injection of many "good ideas" into the new party. On the negative side, many PLD voters had abandoned the new party and returned to the PNL fold.
The Liberal Democrat Party (PLD) was a political group run by Teodor Stolojan, derived from the National Liberal Party. Three of the six parties in the Romanian parliament explicitly redefined themselves as "popular" or "conservative" in 2006, including President Basescu's Democratic Party (PD). Their motive was to curry favor with the European Popular Party (EPP), a heavyweight in the European Parliament (EP). The Democrat Party shifted from center-left to center-right by affiliation with the European Popular Party and European Democrats (PPE-DE) and fusion with Liberal Democrat Party, thus forming a new political force named the Democrat Liberal Party (PD-L). The Party of European Socialists (PES) decided 19 May 2005 to "postpone" the PD's membership bid - and to grant the PSD full membership. The PES acerbically concluded that the PD still needs to define its ideological stance. PES representatives also visited Bucharest May 10-11 in an (entirely unsuccessful) attempt to reconcile the viscerally opposed PD and PSD. Relations between PD and the international socialist movement had been chilly ever since the Socialist International openly backed PSD in the December 2004 parliamentary and presidential elections. Many PD leaders and members would be relieved to finally sever their international social democratic ties.
The Liberal Democratic Party was the successor of the National Salvation Front, Democratic Party, democratic labour party, Social Democratic party Unity, the Democratic front, the National Alliance Party, Partido Romanian Pensioners and social protection and the Liberal Democratic Party, parties with whom p.d.l. merged by absorbing. Appearing as a wide range of movements during the revolution of December 1989, the FSN started existence on 23 December 1989 by the statement of the program of the FSN Council, which later formed the provisional Government led by Petre Roman.
On 17 June 1990 the first legitimate post-Decembrist Government was invested, composed mostly of members of the FSN. The Prime Minister of the Government was Petre Roman, national leader of the FSN. In August 1991 there was a reshuffle of the Government by co-opting a liberal Minister. The FSN diverged inside on the pace and nature of the reform led to the gradual shaping of two groups: Group Roman and grouping Iliescu.
On 24 September 1991 miners of the JIU Valley came to the capital to protest. On 27 September 1991 Petre Roman lodged a mandate, a gesture interpreted by President Ion Iliescu as resignation. Without issuing a document in which to legislate the blotting out of the Government, the Parliament invested a new Government under Stolojan. The first National FSN Convention took place on 27-29 March 1992 in Bucharest. Delegates to the Convention were to vote for one of the 3 motion supported by groups of parties. Motiunea Future by grouping Novel got the most votes and got FSN's political program. At the same time, thePetre Roman became President of the FSN. This situation was not accepted by Ion Iliescu, who detached from the FSN to form a new public policy: P.D.S.R.
The general election in the same year brought for FSN 11% of the votes. FSN passed into opposition with PNTCD, PNL and Democratic Alliance. On 11 May 1993, FSN merged with the Democratic Party, and the name are in the Democratic Party, registered as a legal person. 13 of 23 May 1993 the Court Bucharest. Although it was not the default, Victor Ciorbea resigned from the Office of Mayor.
The Government of the Democratic Party join in on April 17, 1998, along with c.d.r, U.D.M.R. and P.S.D.R. by signing a protocol of governance which explicitly tasked each Minister. This service in Government with the same ministers and with the same allies, brought a decrease in the Democratic Party's credibility.Replacement of Prime Minister Radu Vasile Mugur Isarescu on 21 December 1999 completely changed the PD team in Government, with the exception of Petre Roman who accepted appointment at the head of Foreign Secretary, and the second position in the State, that of President of the Senate.
The General and local elections in 2000 were the Democratic Party's in the biggest loss. If the party succeeded in 7% in parliamentary elections, Petre Roman barely added 3% of the votes cast for President. The Democratic Party was in opposition. Traian Basescu's Initiative to the Presidency of P.D. was the only way to restart the party. Victory in elections for the Chisinau mayor since 2000 il legitimeaza on Traian Basescu as the most popular and most democratic party believable personality.
In 2004 the Party of Romanian Social Democracy fused with Social Democratic Party of Romania (the Sergiu Cunescu faction) and the outcome was the Social Democrat Party (PSD.
