His Majesty the King's Guards (HMKG)

His Majesty the King's guards (HMKG) is His Majesty's lifeguards; a peacetime operational unit executing a live mission 24 hours all year through - guarding the Royal Family, as well as other guard-, security- and escort missions. HMKG is a unit full of traditions, and has guarded the Royal Families of Norway for 146 years. The Guards capitalsituated, operational, independent light infantry unit, that also forms an important part of capital of Norway, Oslo's image. The unit has a close and specialised co-operation with the police in connection to guard- and security mission in peacetime.

HMKG's main mission in 2003 was to train its own force, to continually protect His Majesty the King and his Royal Family in peace, crisis and war, the Royal Palace in Oslo, the Royal residence at Skaugum, Asker, as well as Akershus fortress.

HMKG produced forces for its own unit in 2003, one battalion with three companies, for continuous service, based on three drafts. The education focused on individual- and section level training, as well as developing battle competence on combat in built-up areas, escort, light infantry duty, as well as guard- and security duties. The Guards contributed also in 2003 with personnel to international service through education of guard personnel to the Norwegian force in Iraq, as well as a guard-, security- and escort platoon to NOA HRF. The Guards carried out in November-December selection for basic offi cers training, with 50 well-qualified applicants for 12 slots.

HMKG was in 2003 organised as an infantry battalion, with a battalion staff , two rifle companies, one escort company, one staff company, one athletics company, as well as a music- and drill company. In addition to this was the Guards School. The rifl e companies consisted of a company staff , three rifle platoons, a support platoon, and a special platoon with medics, rangers and sappers. The escort company consisted of three escort companies and one reconnaissance company. The staff company was mainly responsible for all support functions. HMKG was situated at Huseby Camp in Oslo, the Guards School at Heistadmoen Camp at Buskerud and the athletics company at Kolsås Camp in Bærum.
