Brigade 4 - Brigade South
Brigade South and 12th Brigade were mechanised, formed from reservists. There were three Type 90 Brigades in the Norwegian Army: ‘Brigade North’, ‘Brigade South’ (also known as 4th Brigade) and 12th Brigade. Brigade North was the Norwegian Army’s main standing regular formation and in the event of war would be deployed immediately to the Finnmark border area. Brigade South and 12th Brigade were formed from reservists. The remaining nine brigades were all Type 78 Brigades, made up of reservist units. Between 1982 and 1985, the M48A2s of Brigade South went through an upgrade program to M48A5 standard. Brigade South (HQ_Oslo) was a battalion group with an infantry battalion, armored company, and self-propelled and field artillery batteries.
During teh Cold War, it was planned that Brigade North (HQ_ Hoggclia, Tromso county) would in wartime advance to the Finnmark border to face a Soviet Front attacking from Murmansk, and Brigade South and 13th Brigade would mobilise and be airlifted north to support it.
