Niels Juel Class

The Niels Juel Class were made up from a three ship class of corvettes, named after General Lieutenant Admiral Niels Juel (1629-97), Denmark's most famous naval commanders. They were in service with the Royal Danish Navy from 1978 until 2009. They were built in Aalborg Shipyard in Denmark and were launched in the period 1978-1980.

The Corvettes were 52.2 m long, 10.3 m wide and had a draft of 4.8 m. Deplacement was 1450 tonnes. Main propulsion was accomplished by 1 General Electric gas turbine 1 and MTU diesel cross-speed engine, which gave the Niju at. a maximum speed of around 28 Knots. Normal crew comprised of 93 people, including 15 officers, 10 and 68 privates sergeants.

Corvette's armament consisted of HARPOON surface to surface, vertical launch Seasparrow missiles, a 76 mm canon air target practice, Stinger Air target missiles, a number of 12.7 mm machine guns including depth charges.

In 1998-2000 the three vessels had a mid-life update, as well as a large update on the electrical systems. In connection with ship life extension achieved a degree of adaptation and the component ships with the community of other systems used in the Navy.

Corvettes were included in the Solution of a wide spectrum of tasks, including escort and protection of other units. In addition, the included tasks maritime surveillance and sovereignty enforcement, intelligence activities, protection of mine-clearance units including contributing to the maintenance of søherredømmet.

With the introduction of the expanded concept of security including in accordance with NATO's new strategic had Women attributed additional corvettes and different tasks in connection with international operations. Corvettes formed part of NATO's standing naval forces routinely. In addition to the tasks of the NATO aegis ships, could also participate in the Solution of tasks in the UN, the OSCE context, including in coalition operations. The ships have thus participated in operations Both in the context of the Golf wars, including the Adriatic Sea in the Mediterranean. Also corvettes have participated in escort operations in the western part of the Mediterranean Sea.

When Danish corvette Olfert Fischer joined the UN operation against Iraq in 1990-1991, it was seen as the most significant sign of the changing security situation which Denmark and the Navy were facing following the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 and the subsequent collapse of the Warsaw Pact. Much has been much written about Olfert Fischer and its participation in the first Gulf War, causing the following and in many ways larger operation - the Navy's participation in the UN embargo against Serbia and Montenegro from 1993 to 1996 - to slip into the background.

As the first of three corvettes of the NIELS JUEL-class towed, (16 January), NIELS JUEL (F 354) the Korsør Naval Base to Odense for scrapping. The other two OLFERT FISCHER (F 355) and PETER TORDENSKIOLD (F 356) followed.
