POYRAZ Ammunition Resupply Vehicle
The Poyraz Ammunition Vehicle, which will be used to quickly supply ammunition to the 155 mm Self-Propelled Storm Howitzers on the battlefield, was provided by the 1st Main Maintenance Center Command of the KKK. developed. The Ammunition Transfer System allows the ammunition to be loaded into the Ammunition Vehicle quickly and easily at the ammunition supply point; It provides automatic transfer of ammunition transported to the positions in the Ammunition Vehicle to the Storm Howitzers. The name Poyraz means "north" or "north wind" in Turkish, an evocative nature name popular for boys in Turkey. .
Thanks to the Ammunition Transfer System, the POYRAZ Ammunition Vehicle can quickly load ammunition from the ammunition supply point and transfer the required ammunition to the FIRTINA howitzer at the desired place and time, in all kinds of climate, terrain and day and night conditions. The Ammunition Transfer System performs the automatic bullet-powder loading and unloading function through movable mechanisms. The servo control system, electronic systems and software, developed by ASELSAN entirely with domestic facilities, provides the control of moving mechanisms.
Thanks to the command control and communication system integrated by ASELSAN into the Poyraz Ammunition Vehicle with the Ammunition Transfer System, the locations of the Ammunition Supply Points, friendly and enemy units, known points and command locations are displayed on the digital map. The vehicle functions in line with the commands it receives from the command point to which it is connected, either verbally or numerically, and quickly arrives at the desired point thanks to the Global Positioning System (GPS) on it.
Using same chassis and turret with the T-155 FIRTINA-I SPH, the POYRAZ Ammunition Resupply Vehicle is capable of loading ammunition in a supply area and transferring ammunition to the FIRTINA-I SPH within the required time and location in all kinds of terrains and battlefields. The POYRAZ Ammunition Resupply Vehicle has the necessary mobility and survivability capabilities for operation within the tactical operational environment of the FIRTINA-I SPH. Fitted with Aselsan’s automatic Ammunition Transfer System, and compatible with all kind of ammunition used for FIRTINA-I SPHs, the POYRAZ vehicle can carry 96 155mm projectiles and 96 modular powder charges. It can transfer 48 projectiles and 48 modular powder charges in less than 20 minutes to the FIRTINA-I SPH.
The Poyraz Ammunition Supply Vehicle, whose unit tests were carried out at the Artillery and Missile School Command, is used to load ammunition into the Storm Howitzer. Within the scope of the project, it was planned to manufacture a total of 71 vehicles, one for each Storm battery and battalion, and two for training purposes. The prototype vehicle produced was included in the inventory of the Turkish Armed Forces in 2017. Designed to carry 96 pieces of 155 millimeter NATO ammunition of all kinds, the vehicle can automatically transfer bullets and gunpowder semi-automatically in 20 minutes under all terrain conditions to the Storm howitzer. With a combat weight of 50 tons and a 750 horsepower engine, the vehicle can be deployed in all terrain conditions and has a range of 360 kilometers.
Inventory records of different types and quantities of ammunition are created, the inventory information created is transmitted to the higher command centers, and the inventory is updated as needed. The POYRAZ Ammunition Vehicle can operate in line with the voice or digital commands it receives from the command post it is connected to, and it can move rapidly and change places thanks to the Global Positioning System (GPS) on the vehicle. The locations of the Ammunition Supply Points, friendly and enemy units, known points and command posts can be displayed on the digital map.
The Main Maintenance Factory Directorate completed production of the POYRAZ Ammunition Resupply Vehicle prototype in 2011 and the vehicle was displayed during the IDEF ‘11 Fair. Following the extensive test campaign acceptance of the prototype vehicle was completed and the serial production phase, covering 70 vehicles commenced in 2013. The 9.5m long, 3.76m height and 47 ton POYRAZ Ammunition Resupply Vehicle is operated by three crew and powered by a V-12 type 750hp AVDS-1790 diesel engine coupled with an Allison CD-850 automatic transmission. This power pack was obtained from M48A5T1 MBTs that were phased-out of Turkish Land Forces service.
