Kortenaer - Elli Class
The Kortenaer entered service in 1981, only a year after it was ordered from Royal Schelde of Holland. Two ships of this class also served in the Eastern Mediterranean and Red Sea during operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm.
An excellent general purpose frigate, the basis of the design of the Type 122 class ships of the German navy. The first two ships were sold to Greece while still under construction, the other four were transferred after being withdrawn from Dutch service for cost reasons. Also known as the Standard class in Greek service. The two original Greek ships kept the 76mm aft as well as forward. In Dutch service, the aft 76mm was replaced by a Goalkeeper CIWS, the Greek ships received two Phalanx 20mm CIWS each instead. Upon transfer, the Goalkeeper was replaced by Phalanx, the Sea Sparrows with Aspide.
The Hellenic Navy's seventh S-type frigate, HS Bouboulina, arrived at the Salamis Base and was inducted into Destroyer Command's 1st Destroyer Squadron on 4 April 2002. Formerly the Royal Netherlands Navy frigate HrMs Pieter Florisz of the Kortenaer class, Bouboulina was commissioned into the HN at the Netherlands' Den Helder base on 14 December 2001. It is broadly similar to the HN's other S-type frigates, retaining a number of systems unique to the class.
