History - Naval Protection Force (Marineschutzkräfte)

Marineschutzkräfte, MSKThe naval protection force goes back to the founding of naval pioneer [engineer] battalion in 1958 in Sengwarden (Friesland) at Wilhelmshaven. It under the command of the destroyer to establishing the commands of the amphibious forces later amphibious group.

The Seebataillon «the sea battalion" or marine battalion of the Prussian army, was organized in 1852. With this name has been at the first Lake battalion of Germany founded in 1852 in Szczecin Royal Prussian Navy reminds. The Lake battalion was to prepare the Beach and coastline for landing troops of the size of a brigade. It took over protection of the coastal zone, critical facilities and naval contingents to consolidate discipline onboard and small landings, the Marines of Prussian and later German Navy took different names and functions until the reorganization in 1956 Bundesmarine, the Federal Navy of West Germany.

After one year the unit was named traditional sea battalion (1959-1965) and troop trial (1988-1990). In 1960 it was divided into the following units: Staff and supply company; Boat company; Port construction and operating company; Beach master company. After two years there were new structural changes: from the port construction and operating company Beach pioneer company, staff and supply company was now just a rod company. The Lake battalion was dissolved in Borkum in 1964.

From 1958 until 1993, the role of the Marines was to strengthen the collective defense of NATO in the coastal area of ??the Baltic, protecting ports and coasts of West Germany and reinforcing the islands between Denmark and Holland. They organized into a detachment landing craft with two Landing units, two battalions transport and aid amphibians, marine battalion, company of coast organization and a company of frogman. The mission of German marines and flotilla landings were supportive and secondary. Between 1968 and 1973 there was an attempt to acquire more active orientation with American landing LCM (such as "Roussen" and "Oinousai" of RL) and aided where appropriate by sections of the army and amphibians pioneers. Within this force the sea battalion continued from 1988 to 1991 and under the amphibious group. It included the beach masters and the Kampfschwimmer company directly under the amphibious group until then.

But a study in the early 1970s for survival against heavy Soviet units concluded that the Marines would have no hope and the amphibian administration returned to its old functions.

In the early years the Federal Navy began in the 1960s to set up reserve security forces for the protection of its units ashore. In the case of defense these inactive troop units would have been activated. They were stationed at strategically important locations, e.g. with depots or along the West German Baltic Sea coast. All logistic mechanisms of the navy were subordinate to the naval support command with seat Wilhelmshaven up to the dissolution. In addition among other things depots belonged and bases. Altogether 36 inactive safety device courses and three inactive safety device company were subordinate to the command as well as its agencies. These troop units were units (GerEinh), i.e. it existed only stored material. In the case of defense the troop units would have been filled up by reservists. The soldiers would have taken over the material, in order to secure and defend for them assigned locations.

For the protection of the fleet command in luck castle and the landbound naval telecommunications equipment 25 inactive safety device courses existed as units. Between 1973 and 1991 three naval base safety devices' groups existed. They were part active and consisted in times of peace only of an active unit, the first company. This can be regarded as a light infantry company. The groups were subordinate to a respective naval base command.

So-called ground defense squadrons were subordinated to the naval pilot squadrons in Kiel, Kropp, north wood and Tarp. In the 1970's they received the designation Reserve Security Squardrons, later then (navy) to Security companies, subordinated to air bases of the squadron. Those in each case 1st company, which was active, used the field cannons 20 mm as so-called heavy company to the security.

In 1993, the marine battalion dissolved as unnecessary in the period of post-Cold War peace.

The Naval Security Regiment (Marinesicherungsregiment - MSichRgt) existed from 1 October 1996 by 30 September 2001 with location luck city. It was subordinate to the board of admiralty (MarA) in Rostock. The naval safety device battalions 1, 2, 3 and 4 as well as the naval training battalion were subordinate to the MSichRgt. For the realization of an employment contingent of navy for the employment in peacetime with employments of the German Federal Armed Forces in the context of international obligations outside of Germany on 1 September 1999 the employment course 1 was set up and subordinated in each regard to the staff fleet command. End of the yearly participated the employment course 1 in the 2nd KFOR contingent.

The Naval Security Battalion 1 (Marinesicherungsbataillon - MSichBtl 1) existed with a troop strength of approximately 500 soldiers from 1 January 1991 up to 31. March 2005. First it was subordinately, following from 1996 to 2001 the MSichRgt and the naval section command Baltic Sea the flotilla of mine armed forces. The last employments of the MSichBtl 1 the protection of US-American mechanisms belonged in South Germany in the year 2003. In addition the battalion was supplemented by personnel of a dissolved speedboat squadron around three further on now seven companies. Its personnel recruited itself among other things from members of the 3rd mine search squadron (whose boats in this time only with emergency crew were bound to the jetty) and the 3rd speedboat squadron dissolved in the same year.

The Naval Security Battalion 3 (MSichBtl 3) was created on 1 April 1991 in Rostock and subordinated first to the coastal defense regiment 18. A little later, on 1 July 1991 the assumption followed under the naval command Rostock. With the transfer in the year 1996 the battalion was assigned briefly to the board of admiralty, before it came under the roof of the again created MSichRgt. On 30 September 2001 the MSichBtl 3 was dissolved.
