Fregate modulaire 400 FM400

A new family of frigates was released by DCNS design offices on 16 September 2009. Benefiting from the developments of the FREMM program, the Frgates Modulaires 400 (FM 400) are dedicated to the export market. Following the La Fayette stealth light frigates, this new range will occupy the mid-tonnage frigate segment, between the Gowind family and the multi-mission frigate family (FREMM).

The big difference compared to FLF, for which DCNS had developed derivatives from the French platform (Taiwan, Saudi Arabia, Singapore), is that this time the industrialist has imagined a complete, versatile, Adapt to the varied needs of customers who do not necessarily have the same expectations.

The six surveillance frigates [fregates de surveillance] of the 2,950-ton Floreal class were built to civilian standards, and have about 25 years of service-life. Comissioned in the early 1990s, they must be replaced in the 2020-2025 timeframe. To contain costs the, French navy probably would want to replace them with a similar number of vessels of possibly less expensive design.

The DCNS FM400 is a 4,000 ton design brought forward for this requirement, but may be a bit too expensive. CNIM's "MPV Multi-Purpose Vessel" is a 2,000 ton innovative catamaran design, but might also be seen as an expensive solution. The DCNS Gowind Action/Presence design is a 2,000 ton OPV. And the CMN "Combattante-CL78" is a 1,300 ton light-corvette/OPV design.

The FM400 concept is based on a generic platform design providing supremacy power in surface warfare and efficient self-defense capabilities in all warfare domains. Dedicated versions enable to enhance its capabilities. FREMM legacy features include all-signatures stealth; SETIS combat system; Optimised on-board/ashore maintenance and servicing; Exceptional survivability by design and military construction standards.

The General purpose FM400 implements high-performance 3D radar, EW, hull-mounted sonar, SSM and SAM capabilities, one 76 mm gun, 3 x 12.7 mm remotely-controlled guns, modern and interoperable COMS, and fully-integrated and flexible CMS. The FM400 anti-submarine warfare ASW variant is fitted with a complete integrated sonar suite including hull-mounted, towed array and helicopter-borne sonar, as well as ship-borne and helicopter-borne torpedoes.

FM 400 land attack LA is fitted with high-calibre gun (e.g. 127 mm) for shore fire support. It operates large fast RIBs designed to carry fully-equipped special forces, as well as UXVs for target reconnaissance and designation. FM 400 air warfare AAW is fitted with a longer range detection radar, additional VLS cells for long-range missiles, coordinated EW suite to increase its hard-kill and soft-kill anti-air warfare capability.

SO-standard containers are fitted next to the bridge and connected to the ships operational networks to enhance modular mission payloads (e.g. temporary command center, UAV control station, etc...). DCNS integrated mast design along with bridge wings allow panoramic surveillance, 360 coverage to counter asymmetric threats and detection. The large covered stern deck is designed to host several RIBs for all-weather launch and recovery. The same deck can accommodate a towed-array sonar. FM400 command, control communication and information systems cooperate with other up-to-date systems at sea and ashore. FM400 flexible propulsion architecture is made of unique three shaft arrangements optimised for mission and fuel efficiency. Propulsion can easily be adapted to specific requirements.
