C Sword 90

French shipyard Constructions Mécaniques de Normandie (CMN) introduced a new 95 meter missile corvette design. At Eurosatory 2014 CMS unveiled the latest concept design of its new C Sword 90 stealth corvette, a direct descendant of the Combattante family of compact missile boats that was first introduced in the 1960s. Part of its efficiency results from the inversed stem, contributing for enhanced propulsive efficiency and sea keeping. The round bilge shaped hull also contributes to better endurance in strong wind and rough sea conditions.

Based on its experience gained with almost 700 vessels - among which 90 belonging to the Combattante type – built and delivered all over the world, the C Sword 90 Corvette is indisputably one of the most innovating units on the extended market of military vessels. A model of the corvette, known as the C Sword 90, was unveiled at the IMDEX 2015 exhibition in Singapore. The company is marketing it to navies that operate in littoral waters, especially in the Southeast Asian region.

The distinctive shape of the C Sword 90 depicts an innovative hull formation and superstructure design with sloped surfaces, developed in collaboration with naval architect Thierry Verhaaren, who also designed the Baynunah missile boats CMS has built for the UAE. The vessel is designed for operation at the high sea, littorals and coastal area. The hull is made of steel and superstructure is made of steel and aluminium.

The vessel features a hull design with reduced radar cross-section and has a flight deck that can accommodate a helicopter weighing up to 10 tonnes. The corvette has a maximum speed of 28 kt and can attain a standard range of 7,000 n miles at 12 kt. It can carry a crew of 65 with additional berths for 20. The vessel is powered by two propulsion diesel engines and two controlled pitch propellers.

The ship can carry up to two rigid hull inflatable boats (RHIBs) with dedicated davits and can be equipped to deploy unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) or unmanned underwater vehicles (UUVs).The C Sword 90 Corvette offers a high strike power thanks to one 76mm gun aft and two tele-operated 20mm or 30mm guns for the treatment of the asymmetrical threats.

In addition to the preceding are installed 8 MM40 anti-ship missiles plus 16 anti-aircraft ones with vertical launchers and 2 short-range anti-aircraft missile systems. The C Sword 90 Corvette is equipped with decoy launchers offering both an anti-missile protection with radar or infrared guidance and an electro-acoustic anti-torpedoes protection. The C Sword 90 Corvette can accommodate all infrastructure and equipment necessary for an antisubmarine warfare (ASM) operation. ASM means are here particularly developed including a hull mounted sonar, a towed sonar and torpedo-launching tubes.

The modularity of the C Sword 90 Corvette enables the operation of submarine drones and tele-operated surface devices or 11m-long RHIB for the landing and/or intervention of commandos. The C Sword 90 Corvette shows an aft platform capable to accommodate a 10-ton class helicopter.

The C Sword 90 Corvette is equipped with a new four fixed array panels naval radar ensuring a 360° permanent surveillance scope of the sea and air environments, completed with an extended range of electronic warfare means (R-ESM, C-ESM) and with an electro-optical system used also as fire-control system. The whole system is interfaced with the “Integrated Bridge Control System” and the “Integrated Naval Communication System”.
