BMT Group

BMT, a leading engineering, science and technology consultancy, operating mainly in the maritime industries. In partnership with Thales Naval UK, BMT’s twin island carrier design, complete with reconfigurable flight deck options, was the winning design for the QEC Aircraft Carrier. Key disciplines employed include structures, transport, fire protection, control & instrumentation, fuel systems, safety, stability, weight control, supportability, general arrangement, technical documentation and auxiliary systems. BMT staff were in key posts to ensure that the BMT winning platform design, as built, achieves original design intent.

Customers across the world buy outcomes: cost-effective solutions to business problems that require technical excellence, independent thinking and innovation. With around 1,500 professionals located in 66 offices in Europe, Asia and the Americas we draw upon a wide range of experience and expertise to provide high-quality, high-value products and services. These aim to help customers operate their businesses in the most cost-effective, safe, reliable and environmentally responsible manner. BMT's combination of intellectual rigor and commercial insight has helped us to play an important and increasing role in industries as diverse as oil and gas, defence, renewable energy, ports, risk management and maritime transport.

Formed in 1985 from the merger of the UK's British Ship Research Association and National Maritime Institute, BMT's heritage includes the water tanks where the famous 'bouncing bomb' was developed during WWII as well as major, more recent advances in computer-aided design and aerodynamics.

A commitment to investing in people and high-quality research has enabled the modern BMT to continue that pioneering maritime spirit: from designing the world's most advanced aircraft carrier to creating new measuring and monitoring systems for the offshore oil and gas industry. In commercial shipping BMT played a key role in landmark events, including the investigation into the 1987 sinking of the RoRo ferry, Herald of Free Enterprise. On land, BMT helped to test and improve the design of some of the world's tallest buildings and fastest racing cars. BMT is also part of the European Space Agency development team.

BMT's independence is guaranteed by status as an Employee Benefit Trust (EBT), giving people the freedom to think without limits and create ground-breaking solutions. BMT Group Ltd is a member-based company limited by guarantee, with the assets of the company held in beneficial ownership for its staff. The EBT Trustees' remit is to act in the best interests of all the staff in the short, medium and long-term and they themselves are not beneficiaries. The EBT is evidence of BMT's commitment to the people who drive its success. Their independence and commitment mean that BMT can continue to provide the valuable insight and knowledge customers require.
