MPV70 MKII Multipurpose Combat Vessel

Ecuador’s ASTINAVE EP shipyard selected Fassmer’s MPV70 MKII design for the Ecuadorian Navy’s (Armada del Ecuador) new Multipurpose Combat Vessel. The company Astilleros Navales Ecuatorianos (Astinave) would build the so-called first multipurpose ship in the country. Its manager Camilo Delgado said that the project will take 30 months to complete. In the ribbon cutting that symbolized the start of the works, Delgado said that for the contracting of the construction kit they invited more than 20 naval shipyards in the world. The act carried out on Monday morning was attended by the Defense Minister, Oswaldo Jarrín. He pointed out that the multipurpose ship will allow extending the permanence in the territorial sea, such as expanding surveillance coverage and assisting populations at risk from the sea, among other services.

Fassmer previously provided the MPV70 design for the German ministry of environment. The 70-meter vessel displaces 2,400 tons and has a range of 1,800 nautical miles. Ecuador's ASTINAVE EP shipyard selected Fassmer's MPV70 MKII design for the Armada del Ecuador new Multipurpose Combat Vessel program. The MPV70 MKII is a novel design, part of a family of new Fassmer naval vessels focusing on the combination of support and patrol roles, providing fleet-level asset optimization as well as enhanced capabilities for disaster relief and humanitarian aid.

The vessel would be built by ASTINAVE EP in Guayaquil with design, engineering, technical support and material packages from Fassmer. The MPV70 MKII design will feature ASTINAVE EP's Orion combat management system and an integrated mast featuring a full digital radar co-developed by Virtualabs S.R.L. from Italy and ASTINAVE EP. The MPV70 MKII capable of surveillance and C4I configuration in combination with two stern launched interceptor boats and large flight deck (11t) provides effective patrol and deterrence capabilities. Among the logistics capabilities, the vessel can handle various containers and liquid cargo and is designed with RAS transfer systems to support other ships.

The MPV70 MKII will enhance the Ecuadorian navy logistics abilities while increasing its presence in the EEZ, providing SAR capabilities and protecting fisheries and other natural resources. Fassmer was selected through an international tender process and signed a contract with ASTINAVE on December 2019.
