Songjon Pando Base

Songjon-Pando is a base complex developed in the 1960s and 1970s to support patrol and missile boats. Facilities for supply and administration are present, and it is probable that undergraound ordnance storage has been constructed. A patrol boat pen with a bulkhead suitable for berthing vessels at its entrance has been constructed, and missile support facilities are present.

The base is located 4 1/2 miles north of Munch'on, (approx 13 miles N. of Wonsan). The harbor consists of two areas: one is a small natural harbor in the NW part of Songjon-man, at the NE tip of the Songjon-Pando peninsula, with depths of 9 to 22 feet. The other area is a 1/2 sq. mile natural harbor on the SE side of So-man, a large bay branching off the west side of Songjon-man, with depths of 20-30 ft. at each side of the harbor with a shallow, obstructed center area. Controlling depths in the approaches are 22 feet and 19 feet, respectively. Tides and weather conditions are benign.

Extensive, sheltered anchorage is available in Songjon-man over a good holding ground of mud in 22-60 foot depths. Within the naval base proper, there are at least 7 berths for attack craft along 830 ft. of wharfage. Depths alongside are estimated at 10-24 ft.

Songjon-Pando is part of the larger Wonsan naval/maritime complex, with shipyards, storage facilities, and road/rail connections.
