Cuba - World War III.2
Cuba has said it is not involved in the war in Ukraine. The Cuban government has begun criminal proceedings against a trafficking network that recruited Cubans to fight in Russia's war in Ukraine. The Cuban government has also said that it will act vigorously against those who traffic Cubans as fighters.
Cuba is a close ally of Russia. The two countries have close economic ties, and Russia is Cuba's leading creditor. Cuban government officials have largely echoed Russia's positions on the Ukraine war. However, Cuba has abstained from United Nations votes that demanded Russia exit Ukraine. Cuba has also blamed the U.S. and NATO for the conflict.
Members of the Cuban Embassy in Ukraine celebrated the "Victory Day against Fascism" 09 May 2021, and paid tribute to the heroes of the Great Patriotic War and to the fallen in the Second World War. Cuban diplomats placed flowers at the "Tomb of the Unknown Soldier", together with directors and members of the Ukrainian "Stop Blockade" Committee, where they were able to exchange with Ukrainian veterans of the Great Patriotic War.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Cuba on 26 Februry 2022 stated "The efforts of the United States to impose the progressive expansion of NATO towards the borders of the Russian Federation constitutes a threat to the national security of this country and to regional and international peace. The US government has spent weeks threatening Russia and manipulating the international community about the dangers of an "imminent massive invasion" of Ukraine. It has supplied weapons and military technology, deployed troops to various countries in the region, applied unilateral and unfair sanctions, and threatened other reprisals. At the same time, he unleashed an anti-Russian propaganda campaign.
"Cuba has previously warned about the danger of this policy. On February 22, 2014, the then President of the Councils of State and Ministers, Army General Raúl Castro Ruz, warned: “Right now, alarming events are taking place in Ukraine. The intervention of Western powers must stop (...) It should not be ignored that these events can have very serious consequences for international peace and security”. Years later, on September 26, 2018, before the General Assembly of the United Nations, the President of the Republic Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, warned that: "The continued expansion of NATO towards the borders with Russia causes serious dangers, aggravated by the imposition of arbitrary sanctions that we reject”.
"We call on the United States and NATO to seriously and realistically address the well-founded demands of the Russian Federation for security guarantees, which has the right to defend itself. Cuba advocates for a diplomatic solution through constructive and respectful dialogue. We call to preserve international peace and security."
Julio Martinez Molina wrote 30 May 2023 "... another very hot hostile matrix right now is the issue of Russia. Created in order to intimidate and indispose, the new "coconut" of the anti-Cuban narrative arises, in essence, from cerval hatred for the slightest indication of economic takeoff for Cuba and the fear that relations with Moscow open possible doors to diminish the effect of the 243 measures against the Cuban people introduced by Trump and maintained by Biden, and the major damage caused in so many orders by the malicious inclusion on the list of "state sponsors of terrorism.
"And it is established, visibly, in response to the recent visit of the Cuban president, Miguel Díaz-Canel, to the Eurasian power, the increase in high-level diplomatic and security exchanges between the Island and Russia and the various economic announcements recent events that consolidate the alliance of the two countries.
As part of this new flank of confrontation in the communication war waged against our country, lies constitute the main weapon of struggle. In other words, the same weapon for all its attack fronts.
Thus, platforms, "influencers", Miami channels, uncritical repeaters of the deceitful message and local useful idiots, echo delusional statements in which it is stated, for example, that Russia wants to "use Cuba as a parade ground ”, that “Moscow is going to recruit soldiers on the Island for the war in Ukraine”, and “to fill the country with military and communication bases”.
The fallacies also point to the insane statement that "Cuba will be recolonized by the great imperialist nation" and that "another missile crisis could break out in its theater of operations." Others, less incendiary, maintain that, since according to them the Russian population does not have to eat, "Cuba will massively produce papayas for Moscow."
It is another crude disinformation campaign, mounted in order to deceive and confuse not very cautious people who do not know the ethical principles of our country or the history of brotherhood between both nations. And that is sheltered, above all, in the fear that they have that we continue resisting and finding new ways, despite Washington's policy of extermination and the defense of it by those who are now shouting.
Jorge Casals Llano in Granma [Official Organ of the Central Committee of the Communist Party Of Cuba] wrote on 29 August 2022 : "Of course, the reference to the order, be it the "old" or the "new", has to do with the current global geopolitical reordering; it is the "old" that emerged after the Second World War, hegemonized by the United States, particularly after the implosion of the USSR; and "new", the one that begins to become more than evident with Russia's response to the provocations by the US, NATO and their allies that led to the start of the war in Ukraine....
"What is certain is that the 2003 invasion of Iraq and the lies to justify it should also be considered signs of the breakdown of the old order – and of the attempts to maintain it; the expansion of NATO, with the inclusion of ex-Soviet countries; the coup in Ukraine and its Nazification... "Ukraine is getting closer to unleashing a nuclear disaster in Europe with the bombing of the largest atomic plant in the region. If the possible affected countries are observed, it could be affirmed that they are expendable for the "west" and, therefore, permissible. If thinking the above is inadmissible and unheard of, it would suffice to recall Harry S. Truman and Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
"Undoubtedly, the breach of the Minsk Agreements and NATO's approach to Russia to force it to carry out "the unprovoked and unjustified attack" on Ukraine and the visit, first by Nancy Pelosi and then by other members of the US Congress. USA to Taiwan, were moves that started the same and very dangerous game that Biden, USA and his acolytes, ignoring logic and recommendations, decided to play on the "world board". Forced to cross the Rubicon, Putin and Russia responded to them with the "special military operation"".
Miguel Díaz-Canel, the first president born after the Cuban Revolution, responded August 5, 2023 to Público, in his first interview with a Spanish medium since he took office, "We reject the progressive expansion of NATO towards Russia's borders, which has led to a scenario with implications of unpredictable scope. As a country that defends International Law and is committed to the Charter of the United Nations, which will always defend peace, we condemn all the sanctions that are applied to the Russian Federation, as a method of coercion. We advocate a diplomatic and realistic solution that guarantees the security and sovereignty of all and addresses legitimate humanitarian concerns."
Cuba said 04 September 2023 it had uncovered a human trafficking ring recruiting Cubans to fight for Russia in Ukraine. The Cuban foreign ministry said the ring was operating both locally and in Russia and is trafficking Cubans to fight in the warzone with the Russian military. The ministry did not specify who is responsible but said it is trying to dismantle the network. This came after social media reports by Cubans in Russia's military said they were tricked into joining and were being mistreated after refusing to fight.
Russian media had also previously reported that Cubans were joining the fight in Ukraine in exchange for the promise of Russian citizenship. Cuba and Russia are longtime allies but Cuba had stressed that it "is not part of the war in Ukraine." Russia had not commented.
