Type 635 Yanlai - Ship List
Ships in PLAN service are designated by a combination of two Chinese characters followed by three-digit number. The first Chinese character denotes which fleet the ship is service with, with East (Dong) for East Sea Fleet, North (Bei) for North Sea Fleet, and South (Nan) for South Sea Fleet. The second Chinese character is Ce, meaning survey in Chinese, because these ships are classified as survey ship.
Dong Biao is literally Eastern Beacon or Eastern Standard, and Beidiao means North Beacon. It is probably the case that Dong Biao 226 was later redesignated Dong-Ce 226.
The taxonomy of the various subtypes of this class is hopelessly jumbled.
