Type 271 Yanha Class

The Yanha class [variously reported as Type 071 or Type 271] is capable of carrying out electronic intelligence, ocean tug, and icebreaking duties.

China's sea ice is the heaviest in the northern part of the Bohai Sea, followed by the Yalu River estuary. The southern part of the Bohai Sea is the lightest. The Yingkou, Huludao, Pulandian and other harbors are heavier. The annual ice age is about 3 months and the ice thickness is 20-40 cm. Generally speaking, sea ice in our country is not serious, but it will form a serious ice seal in special weather. After the founding of New China, Chinas demand for icebreaking is not strong, and no new professional icebreakers have been built.

In 1969, there was a rare "big ice damage" in the history of the Bohai Sea in China. The strong impact of sea ice has hit China's Bohai No. 2 oil drilling platform (Hai Erjing), and dozens of ships in Tianjin Port have been crushed by ice. Many coastal projects have also been destroyed by sea ice. At that time, the Navy and the Shanghai Salvage Bureau organized Haituo 221, Smoke Rescue No. 9 and Jin rescue No. 3 and other rescue vessels to break the ice channel outside Tianjin Port, and rescued and escorted 131 ships. After the news of the frozen sea in Bohai reached Beijing, Premier Zhou Enlai immediately indicated that China must build its own icebreaker.

The first generation of the Navy's "Haibing 722" icebreaker was personally approved by Premier Zhou Enlai on September 14, 1969. The Sixth Machine Military Management Committee designed and constructed the task to a new shipyard. It was built by Shanghai Qixin Shipyard and construction lasted 103 days. It was launched on December 26 of that year. On February 1, 1970, the first 271 icebreaker "Hai Bing 722", designed and built by the New Shipyard, was delivered. The pennant number of the first unit consists of two Chinese character Hai-bing (meaning Sea Ice in Chinese), followed by a three digit number.

The ship has a total length of 84 meters and a length of 76 meters. Meter, type 6.8 meters deep, draught 5 meters, speed 16 knots, displacement 3191 tons, endurance rate 10,000 nautical miles, the main engine is 1939.6 kW (2600 hp) diesel engine. The maximum ice-breaking thickness of the ship is 1 meter; there are repair equipment on the ship, and it can bring more oil and water. If the ship in distress can be replenished in time, it can also tow a 10,000-ton.

The ship won the 1977 Shanghai Major Scientific and Technological Achievement Award. 1978 National Science Conference Award, 1978 Shanghai Shipbuilding Industry Bureau Major Scientific and Technological Achievement Award.

During the service of the first generation of "Haibing 722", it was once one of the only two icebreakers in the Chinese Navy. It served in the Navy for 44 years and accumulated more than 300,000 nautical miles. It successfully completed rescue and disaster relief, icebreaking, and ice survey. Various major tasks such as transportation towing, college internship, experimental support, combat readiness training, and training exercises have made outstanding contributions to promoting local economic development, national defense, and military modernization. In June 2013, the first generation of Sea Ice 722 icebreaker was retired, five months before the start of the construction of the first unit of this first unit of Type 272 icebreaker in November 2013. In the past 40 years, it has completed 42 ice investigation missions, rescued more than 20 local vessels and participated in more than 30 large-scale missions.
