Haiqing-class coastal ASW patrol craft

The Haiqing is a new class of dedicated coastal ASW patrol craft with a design very similar to the Hainan class but with updated weapons and sonar. Construction began in 1992, and 26 hulls had been completed as of 2002. The Haiqing is equipped with a hull mounted high frequency sonar and two ASW rocket launchers in the bow to carry out its ASW duties. It also houses a compliment of guns which provide limited anti-aircraft capability, as well as self defense against other surface vessels. While the Haiqing class will certainly expand the limited ASW capabilities of the PLAN in coastal waters, additional larger and more capable ASW platforms such as the Jiangwei class frigate is required to enhance the deep sea ASW operations to meet the PLAN's blue water aspirations.
