LAV II Bison

The Bison is an eight-wheeled armored vehicle originally designed as an infantry section carrier. Bison Re-role Project re-roled existing Bison vehicles into 7 new variants for a total of 199 vehicles. The total project value is estimated to be $50 million. A first contract was awarded to DEW Engineering and Development Limited in January 2003 and was scheduled for completion in September 2009. A portion of the project is also expected to be conducted by General Dynamics Land Systems - Canada in October 2007. Prime Contractors are General Dynamics Land Systems - Canada (GDLS-C), London Ontario DEW Engineering and Development Limited, Ottawa, Ontario.

The Bisons were converted into support variants for the new Light Armoured Vehicle (LAV III). These variants will include Ambulance, Electronic Warfare, Mobile Repair Team, Maintenance and Recovery, and NBC Reconnaissance. The new variants will come equipped with an upgrade in engine power, new torsion bars, fittings for add-on armour, air conditioning, and the VRS respirator system for NBC defence. Delivery of the upgraded vehicles will take place in stages from 2002-2008.

In April 2007, NRC was tasked by the Director Land Command Systems Program Management (DLCSPM) to design and integrate a complete installation kit to support the re-configuration of 4 newly refurbished Light Armoured Vehicle (LAV) Bison. Countless hours of effort from Mechanical and Electrical Engineers, the Material Planning section, Manufacturing shops, the Integration and Assembly team were spent over a period of 12 months to complete four Electronic Warfare Bison (EW-Bison) fully integrated with a Mobile Electronic Warfare Technology (MEWT) suite. These four vehicles completed a series of performance tests required by DLCSPM as part of the acceptance process prior to being airlifted and handed over to Canadian Forces deployed in Afghanistan.
