Commandante General Irigoyen
(USS Cherokee) class fleet/patrol tugs
Former USN fleet tugs rated as patrol ships and employed as dual-role patrol/towing-salvage vessels. "Commander Gral. Irigoyen"was given to the Argentina Navy on 9 July 1961. The "Francisco de Gurruchaga", on July 24, 1975 and the "non-commissioned officer Castle", on September 30, 1993 (her name pays homage to warrant officer first of infantry of Marina July Saturnino Castle, the Malvinas war hero, who was awarded our highest award: ¨the Argentine nation to the HEROIC value in COMBATE¨.)
These vessels fulfilled valuable services since its incorporation, as ships of submarines, Antarctic campaigns support rescue, rescue of most of the survivors of the Cruiser "General Belgrano", when it was sunk by the English nuclear submarine "Conqueror" in the 1982 Falklands war. They have shown excellent results for its robustness and maritime conditions.
On 8 December 2009 the Representative of Argentina Armada against Argentine Port Council, Captain Raul Benmuyal, visiting the Port of San Pedro, known to the Director of Culture of the Municipality, José Luis Aguilar and internalized development Fine with which our City. Start there offering by the Navy ship ARA "General Irigoyen" last vessel to retreat in September of that year, so that it becomes the first ship-museum city in the country.
