The two images above are aerials of a location called the Tarnak Farms, near Kandahar. According to the DoD, it is one of the major al Qaeda training camps funded by Osama bin Laden. Al Qaeda reportedly used to use this facility to train terrorist and small-unit combat operations US and Canadian defense officials at the U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) in Tampa, Florida, said 28 June 2002 that a "friendly-fire" incident in Afghanistan in April was the result of failures by two American F-16 fighter pilots. Deputy CENTCOM Commander Michael DeLong described the unfortunate 17 April 2002 incident at Tarnak Farms as "a sad event," but he pointed out that the global war against terrorism continues. He attributed the incident, which resulted in the deaths of four Canadians and the wounding of eight, to "the failure of the two pilots to exercise appropriate flight discipline, which resulted in a violation of the rules of engagement and an inappropriate use of lethal force." |
