AN/SAT-2B / AN/SAR-7 Infrared Communications Group

The Infrared Communication Group consists of an Infrared Transmitting Set AN/SAT-2B and a portable Infrared Viewing Set AN/SAR-7 that provide a secure means for signaling at night under darkened-ship conditions.

The AN/SAT-2B transmits signals in the infrared region of the frequency spectrum which are normally invisible to the unaided eye. The AN/SAT-2B uses two transmitters, mounted port and starboard, which may be operated as a steady source for point-of train purposes, or may be flashed in morse code signaling for recognition. A transmitter control device permits selection of either the port, starboard or both transmitters and permits the mode of operation (steady or manual key). Also, a telegraph keyer allows an operator to manually key the transmitter for morse code operations. The AN/SAT-2B transmitters are operated in the same manner as the yardarm blinkers.

The AN/SAR-7 is a portable infrared viewing set, which receives and converts infrared radiation to visible light. The effective visual range between the AN/SAT-2B and AN/SAR-7 is 8000 yds in clear weather; this range will be affected by adverse weather conditions.
