Maersk Vermont [ex-E Ships]

Maersk Sealand and P&O Nedlloyd now trade under the name Maersk Line. Effective 12 February 2006, the combined Maersk Sealand and P&O Nedlloyd businesses will trade as Maersk Line. The Maersk Line network offers customers an expanded geographical scope and service range. It has been designed to optimise cargo routing providing customers with greater flexibility, higher frequency and improved transit times. The majority of P&O Nedlloyd vessels will be phased in during February 2006. The large majority of services will be in place by mid March, and by June 2006 the Maersk Line network will be fully implemented.

MM&P-contracted Farrell Lines and P&O Nedlloyd confirmed on 06 June 2000 the proposed acquisition of Farrell by P&O Nedlloyd Ltd., of England (P&ONL) through the merger of Farrell and P&O's US subsidiary, P&O Nedlloyd Acquisition Corp. Farrell is one of the last US shipping lines. MM&P anticipates the continuation of all positions aboard those Farrell vessels under MM&P contract. On July 10, 2000 Acting Maritime Administrator John E. Graykowski consented to the merger of Farrell Lines Inc. and P & O Nedlloyd Acquisition Corp., a wholly owned U.S. subsidiary of P & O Nedlloyd Limited (PONL). PONL is a corporation organized in the United Kingdom.

Farrell Lines was a privately held steamship corporation controlled by the Farrell family, which owns, charters and operates vessels of the United States registry in the ocean borne foreign commerce of the United States. Formed in 1925, the company, then known as American South African Line, began serving South Africa from Eastern U.S. ports in January of 1926, and continued to operate in that trade until August of 1980. In 1947, upon the commencement of regularly scheduled liner service to West Africa from the U.S. east coast, the name of the company was changed to Farrell Lines Incorporated.

P&O Nedlloyd (formerly Farrell Lines) operated a regular liner service to the Mediterranean and by extension of that service, offers through service to the following ports: the Ukrainian ports of Ilychovsk, Odessa and Mariupol, the Russian port of Novorossiysk, and the Georgian ports of Poti and Batumi. Farrell has developed inland transportation capabilities from these ports to inland points in Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Moldova, Kazakhstan, Russia, and Ukraine. Service to the former Soviet Union includes the use of container ships with the capability to handle Ro-Ro and break bulk cargoes, refrigerated, and full and less than container loads.

The approval included the transfer of three Maritime Security Program operating agreements to E Ships, Inc. Under the merger process, Farrell spun off its own wholly owned subsidiary FLI Ships, Inc., which will be renamed E Ships. This was accomplished through the transfer of FLI/E Ships stock to E-Class Holdings, Inc., a new independent corporation, which will become the parent of E Ships. After the merger with P & O Nedlloyd Acquisition, Farrell became the successor entity of the merger and a wholly owned subsidiary of PONL.

FLI owned the containerships ENDEAVOR, ENDURANCE and ENTERPRISE, and Farrell holds the associated MSP operating agreement. E Ships owned and operated the vessels under the MSP agreements after the spinoff. E Ships obtained its operating personnel from among former Farrell operating employees and time chartered its vessels to Farrell for operation. Under the arrangements, all US citizen seafaring jobs associated with the three (3) MSP vessels will be continued. All three (3) Farrell Lines MSP vessels will continue to be operated under US flag."

A.P. Møller-Maersk announced in early 2006 that it had changed the names of the P&O Nedlloyd (PONL) and Farrell Lines vessels it acquired as part of the summer 2005 takeover of its former competitor. In a statement, Maersk said the new Maersk Line network would be fully implemented by June 2006. In the meantime, the company announced the following vessel name changes:

  • Endeavor to Maersk Vermont
  • Endurance to Maersk Maryland
  • Enterprise to Maersk Maine
  • Delaware Bay to Maersk Nevada
  • Chesapeake Bay to Maersk Nebraska
  • PONL Buenos Aires to Maersk Texas effective May 23
  • PONL Vera Cruz to Maersk Louisiana with an effective date to be announced.
