TA. 5 INTELLIGENCE

TA. 5 Positive Trend 1: Intelligence Preparation of the Battlefield (IPB) Process and Application

Observation frequency:4QFY941-3QFY954QFY95 / 1QFY962-3QFY96

4QFY94

SUCCESS 1-1: Understanding the IPB process and effective initial preparation of IPB is continually a strong point in most intelligence sections. Units develop data bases at Home Station during the initial preparation for operations. They normally demonstrate extensive preparation in the following areas:

- collection of information and intelligence
- analysis of terrain and weather
- situational templating.

1-3QFY95

SUCCESS 1-2: Unit initial IPB products, including modified combined obstacle overlay (MCOO) and situation templates are particularly effective. The success of these initial products is attributed to:

- sufficient time at Home Station for preparation in a non-hostile environment
- minimal conflicting priorities.

4QFY95/1QFY96

SUCCESS 1-3: Initial IPB products, including modified combined obstacle overlay (MCOO), doctrinal templates and order of battle files are generally very good.

2-3QFY96

SUCCESS 1-4: Air defense battery commanders generally prepare a detailed IPB in conjunction with the brigade S-2s. Thorough analysis identifies:

- air avenues of approach
- suspected landing zones for resupply
- enemy air order of battle
- probable courses of action.

SUCCESS 1-5: Unit S-2s continue to conduct thorough IPB prior to the JRTC rotation. S-2s are working very hard at Home Station to prepare the IPB products they perceive as necessary to support their commanders. Unit S-2s now develop new and innovative IPB products prior to deployment.

TECHNIQUES
  1. Produce greater proficiency during rotational missions.
    - Conduct battle staff training on all aspects of the Tactical Decision Making Process (TDMP) at Home Station.
    - First develop proficiency in Deliberate TDMP, then transition to Combat and Quick modes by compressing available time.
  2. Maintain the high quality of the initial IPB products prepared at Home Station by appropriately applying them.
