FOREWORD

Welcome from the Mojave Desert! This newsletter is our first attempt to provide timely observations of what is happening here at the National Training Center (NTC). I want to get information into the hands of the warfighters on reoccurring trends, but more importantly, I want to provide tactics, techniques, and procedures (TTP) to help us become more effective--ensuring that maneuver and fire support plans are focused on killing the enemy and achieving success on the battlefield. I welcome comments on how effective we are in reaching that goal.

I offer two observations that I feel are critical to successful execution--but seldom seen out here. First, we must possess Tactical Standing Operating Procedures (TACSOPs) which everyone understands and the battalion routinely uses. More times than not, FA units will arrive at the NTC with a new TACSOP not field-tested during their trainup. Additionally, not all key individuals have a copy, and not everyone is familiar with the procedures. Each unit must have a detailed TACSOP describing the actions or battle drills required for the unit to accomplish a task or mission. Units must follow this TACSOP during all home-station training events. The NTC is not the place to break in a new TACSOP or to develop new ways of doing business.

The second area is the necessity to conduct realistic home-station training that replicates conditions in which you expect to fight. Each leader and soldier must understand these conditions and have trained at night, in MOPP 4, poor weather, under realistic time constraints and tired. If not, the unit will be unprepared to execute its Critical Fire Support Tasks. I hope everyone finds this newsletter helpful. The Wolf Team is dedicated to "Training the Force." If there is anything we can do, please let us know.
