FOREWORD
July 1994
This newsletter provides logistics lessons on Supporting the Offense from Combat Training Centers (CTCs), Operations DESERT SHIELD and DESERT STORM, major training exercises and historical events. The focus is primarily on Forward Support Battalions; however, these lessons can be used by any logistics unit. The targeted audience is logistics and maneuver commanders (DISCOM, brigade, battalion, and company). Recommendations and techniques for staffs are presented.
Many of our current logistics doctrine, training, leadership, materiel, organization, and soldiers (DTLMOS) efforts are focused on defensive operations. This is a direct result of the Army's over 50-year involvement in countering the threat to western Europe. The demise of the Berlin Wall, the unification of Germany, and the disintegration of the Soviet Union may have reduced the threat. Our focus is now shifting to other regions of the world and to the requirement of training a Force Projection Army.
Operations DESERT SHIELD and DESERT STORM exposed some significant combat service support (CSS) shortfalls. Although this approach did not significantly affect the outcome of the war, we cannot conclude that defensive-oriented logistical support will be adequate for the next offensive battles.
This newsletter focuses on employment of logistics in the offense. It is divided into four chapters. Chapter I focuses on many critical CSS functions which should take place before an operation. Chapter II discusses CSS functions that occur during an operation and Chapter III discusses those that need to occur after an operation. Chapter IV discusses safety issues that affect logistical support of the maneuver commander.
We thank the observer/controllers at the CTCs, instructors at TRADOC schools, and veterans of Operations DESERT SHIELD and DESERT STORM who provided input to this newsletter.
