THE
FIRE SUPPORT PROCESS
Effective fire support does not occur by accident or luck. Fire support is a combat multiplier whose integration requires training and practice. The fire support system, like all operating systems of the battlefield, is a continuous process with separate and distinct phases. All phases of the fire support system integrate to produce fires that synchronize with the other battlefield operating systems to achieve success on the battlefield.
Effective fire support starts with and is the responsibility of the commander of the maneuver force. Before the battle staff or the fire support staff begins planning, the commander must first articulate his intent and guidance for the operation.
The maneuver commander's intent is the foundation that drives the process of planning, preparing, and executing the battle. The commander's guidance and intent provide the basis for collection of information, development of the scheme of maneuver and fire support, and integrating the combat power of the seven operating systems into a cohesive, synchronized force.

Fire support planning and preparation begins when the maneuver force commander and orders group or battle staff, to include the Fire Support Coordinator (FSCOORD) and the Fire Support Officer (FSO), receive the mission. The commander and staff closely interact throughout all phases of the operation. As the orders group focuses on the development of the command estimate, the FSCOORD and his staff begin the parallel development of the fire support plan.
The preparation phase gives the commander and staff the opportunity to check and verify the plans against the commander's guidance and to correct all deficiencies before the execution phase.
The execution phase of the fire support plan is the prosecution of the maneuver commander's intent. The fire support plan is an integral part of the maneuver commander's battle plan.
