PREFACE

Success on the battlefield of today is achieved by the maneuver commander who is able to integrate and synchronize all of his combat force at the critical time and place to destroy the enemy. To achieve the intent of any mission the commander must have a complete understanding of the interrelationship of all of the seven battlefield operating systems.

The analogy frequently used to describe the forces of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) is applicable to the seven battlefield operating systems: a chain is only as strong as its weakest link.

Fire Support is one of the most diverse and complex of the seven operating systems that a commander must employ on the modern battlefield. Integrating and synchronizing indirect fires from artillery, mortars, attack helcopters, naval gunfire, and close air support to achieve the desired intent of the maneuver commander is a complex task.

Units participating in force on force training exercises at the Combat Maneuver Training Center (CMTC) , Hohenfels FRG, the Joint Readiness Training Center (JRTC) , Fort Chaffee, Arkansas, the National Training Center (NTC) , Fort Irwin, California, and the Battle Command Training Program (BCTP) "War-fighter" exercises at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, as well as maneuver training exercises throughout the world, know that battles are not won if fire support is not planned, coordinated, and executed well at all levels.

This newsletter was developed for the maneuver commander, brigade and below, and his FSCOORD. It is designed to address the fire support process as it applies to them. Sources include current field manuals and publications, as well as observations and lessons learned from the Combat Training Centers. More detailed discussion of tactics, techniques, and procedures for the Fire Support Officer and Fire Support Coordinator will be included in a future newsletter currently under development with the assistance of the Fire Support Trainers (Werewolves) at the National Training Center.
