SUBJECT II: TRENDS AT THE NATIONAL TRAINING CENTER

Our statistics utilize NTC instrumentation data of O/C verified command vehicle "kills" gathered from 64 missions in FY87. Data does not include subsequent "resurrection" of commanders or vehicles nor does it include commanders "killed" while dismounted or by chemical agents.
Seventy percent (70%) of the deliberate attacks and seventy-six percent (76%) of the defense in sector missions resulted in commander losses. Task Force commanders had better odds in surviving the defense of a battle position at forty-six percent (46%) losses.
Commanders who actively engaged the enemy with their weapons systems were three times more likely to be killed than those who fought with their unit and only fired as a last resort.
Forty-seven percent (47%) of the TF commander losses occurred within an hour of the first direct fire engagement. For those killed in the first hour, the average life span was thirty minutes.
